PRO TIPS

1. Precision Machining is Mandatory

Since this is a "machine-in" style sand seal pulley, you cannot simply bolt it onto a stock, unmodified case. You must have a qualified VW machine shop bore the snout of your engine case to the specific dimensions of the included seal holder. This is typically done during a full engine teardown. If you try to force a fit or use the wrong tolerances, you risk damaging the case or the seal, which defeats the entire purpose of the upgrade. Always measure twice and ensure the seal holder is pressed in straight for a leak-free experience.

2. Verify Belt Alignment and Spacing

When installing a performance aluminum pulley, always check your belt alignment between the crank pulley and the generator or alternator pulley. Even though this is a standard diameter unit, the addition of the sand seal collar and spacers can slightly shift the pulley''s "track." Use the included spacers to ensure the belt runs perfectly vertical. A misaligned belt creates excessive heat, wears out the pulley grooves prematurely, and can lead to a thrown belt at high RPMs, which is a leading cause of engine overheating in air-cooled VWs.

3. Finding True Top Dead Center (TDC)

Don''t assume the degree markings will be 100% accurate out of the box due to variations in crankshafts and woodruff keys. For the most accurate tuning, use a piston stop tool to find the physical Top Dead Center of the number one cylinder. Once TDC is confirmed, verify that the "0" mark on your new EMPI pulley aligns perfectly with your case split or timing pointer. If it''s off by a degree or two, mark the correction on the pulley. This ensures that when you set your timing at 30 degrees of total advance, you are getting exactly what you aimed for.
