Tip 1: Verify Mechanical Top Dead Center

Never assume your pulley and case marks are perfectly aligned out of the box. During your engine build or a major tune-up, use a piston stop tool in the cylinder #1 spark plug hole to find the absolute mechanical Top Dead Center (TDC). Once you have identified the exact peak of the piston stroke, loosen the adjustment screws on your black timing pointer and slide it until it aligns perfectly with the 0-degree mark on your pulley.
