Precision Timing for Ultimate Performance
When you are pushing your air-cooled Volkswagen engine to the limit, whether it is on the street or out in the dunes, precision timing is the difference between peak horsepower and a melted piston. This EMPI high-performance aluminum degree pulley is engineered for the serious engine builder who demands accuracy and durability. Crafted from high-grade billet aluminum and finished with a rugged hard-anodized black coating, this pulley is designed to withstand the high-RPM stresses of a performance flat-four. Unlike cheap pulleys with painted-on marks that fade or chip over time, this unit features laser-engraved degree numbers that provide a permanent, easy-to-read reference for setting your initial timing, total advance, and checking your distributor''s curve. The stock diameter ensures that your cooling fan and alternator or generator continue to spin at the factory-intended speeds, maintaining optimal engine cooling and charging system integrity.
The standout feature of this specific pulley is its compatibility with machined-in sand seal systems. For off-road enthusiasts and performance racers, the standard VW oil slinger system is often the weakest link in oil retention, especially when dirt, sand, and grit are introduced into the environment. This pulley is specifically designed for engine cases that have been professionally machined to accept a physical rubber seal. By moving to a sand seal setup, you are effectively "locking down" the front of your engine against leaks and external contaminants. The hard-anodized finish doesn''t just look sharp in a show-quality engine bay; it provides a superior wear surface for the seal to ride on, ensuring a long-lasting, leak-free interface that can handle the heat and friction of high-speed operation. This kit includes the necessary seal, making it a comprehensive upgrade for your next high-end engine build.
Vehicle and Engine Fitment
- Volkswagen Type 1 Beetle / Bug: 1950 through 1979 (Requires machined case).
- Volkswagen Type 2 Bus / Transporter: 1950 through 1971 (Requires machined case).
- Volkswagen Karmann Ghia: 1955 through 1974 (Requires machined case).
- Volkswagen Type 3 (Fastback, Notchback, Squareback): 1961 through 1973.
- Custom Applications: Ideal for Dune Buggies, Sand Rails, and Trikes utilizing Type 1 based engine cases.
- Note: This pulley is specifically for cases that have been modified (machined) for a sand seal. It will not work with a stock, un-machined engine case.

Pro Tips from the Appletree Garage
1. Verify Your Case Machining: Before ordering, you must confirm that your engine case has already been machined for a sand seal or that you plan to have this service performed by a reputable VW machine shop. A standard stock case uses a spiral-groove oil slinger on the pulley to "throw" oil back into the case. This pulley does not have those grooves because it relies entirely on the included rubber seal. Attempting to use this on a non-machined case will result in an immediate and massive oil leak. If you are building a fresh performance engine, the machined-in sand seal is the gold standard for oil control.
2. Proper Seal Lubrication and Installation: When installing the seal into the machined case and sliding the pulley into place, never install them dry. Use a high-quality assembly lube or a light coating of clean engine oil on the inner lip of the seal and the hub of the pulley. This prevents "dry start" friction which can tear the rubber lip of the seal before the oil pressure even has a chance to stabilize. Also, ensure the pulley hub is perfectly smooth; any nicks or burrs from dropped tools can ruin the seal during installation.
3. Dialing in Your Timing Curve: Use the 360-degree markings to do more than just set your idle timing. With a timing light, you can use these marks to verify exactly when your mechanical advance starts and when it reaches "total" advance (usually around 28-32 degrees for a performance ACVW). If you notice the timing marks jumping erratically while holding a steady RPM, it is a clear indicator of a worn distributor drive gear or a stretched timing chain (on other engines) or, in our case, a worn distributor drive pinion or excessive end play in the crankshaft.
