* Equipped with a 5-hole bolt pattern.
OVERVIEW
Precision timing is the backbone of a high-performance air-cooled engine, and the EMPI Degree Crank Pulley is the ultimate tool for achieving mechanical perfection. Unlike stock steel pulleys that offer limited timing marks, this standard diameter pulley features a full 360-degree scale laser-etched into high-grade aluminum. The vibrant red numbers provide high-contrast visibility, making it incredibly easy to set your initial and total advance even in low-light engine bays. Whether you are tuning a street-driven 1600cc Beetle or a high-revving 2275cc weekend warrior, having an accurate visual reference for your crankshaft position is vital for preventing detonation and maximizing horsepower. The 5-hole design not only looks aggressive but also helps reduce rotating mass compared to heavy factory units, allowing your engine to rev more freely while maintaining the structural integrity required for high-RPM applications.
Crafted from premium billet aluminum and finished with a show-quality polish, this pulley is as much a styling upgrade as it is a functional one. Because it maintains the standard factory diameter, you won''t have to worry about over-spinning or under-spinning your cooling fan or alternator, ensuring that your engine stays cool during long summer cruises. The precision-machined hub ensures a tight fit on the crankshaft, preventing the "wobble" often associated with inferior stamped pulleys. When you install an EMPI degree pulley, you are investing in a component that simplifies maintenance, improves tuning accuracy, and adds a professional, custom look to your Volkswagen''s engine compartment. Don''t settle for guesswork when it comes to your ignition timing; give your engine the precision it deserves with this robust and beautiful performance component.

PRO TIPS
Tip 1: Always Verify Top Dead Center (TDC)
Even with a high-precision degree pulley, you should never assume the woodruff key slot on your crankshaft is perfectly aligned with the pulley''s zero mark. During assembly, use a piston stop tool or a dial indicator through the spark plug hole on cylinder number one to find the absolute physical Top Dead Center. If the 0-degree mark on the pulley is slightly off due to crankshaft manufacturing tolerances, make a small reference mark or adjust your pointer accordingly. This ensures that when you set your timing to 30 degrees of total advance, it is actually 30 degrees, protecting your engine from the catastrophic heat caused by improper timing.
Tip 2: Inspect the Oil Slinger and Hub Surface
Before sliding your new aluminum pulley onto the crankshaft, ensure that the internal oil slinger is installed correctly behind the crank gear. Additionally, inspect the hub of the new pulley for any burrs. Since this is a standard diameter pulley without a sand seal, it relies on the spiral grooves on the hub to "pump" oil back into the case. Always apply a light film of clean engine oil or assembly lube to the pulley hub before installation. This prevents a "dry start" on the case surface and ensures the pulley slides home smoothly without damaging the soft aluminum against the steel crankshaft.
Tip 3: Check Belt Alignment and Tension
After installing a new performance pulley, it is critical to verify that it is perfectly aligned with your generator or alternator pulley. Use a straight edge held against the face of both pulleys to ensure the belt path is true. If the belt is running at an angle, it will cause rapid wear and can even flip off at high RPMs. Furthermore, because aluminum expands and contracts differently than the stock steel pulleys, re-check your fan belt tension after the first 50 miles of driving. A properly tensioned belt should have about 1/2 inch of deflection when pressed firmly in the center.
