* Designed for VW Aircooled applications.
OVERVIEW
Precision timing is the backbone of any high-performance air-cooled engine, and the IAP Degree Crank Pulley with Blue Numbers is engineered to provide the accuracy you need with the show-stopping aesthetics you want. Unlike stock stamped-steel pulleys that often feature vague notches or single dimples for timing, this standard-diameter billet aluminum pulley features a full 360-degree scale laser-etched into the surface. The vibrant blue numbering provides high-contrast visibility against the polished finish, making it effortless to set your initial, total, and idle advance even in the tight confines of a crowded engine bay. Whether you are tuning a mild 1600cc cruiser or a high-revving stroker motor, having a clear and accurate reference for your crankshaft position is essential for preventing detonation and maximizing power output.
Crafted from high-grade aluminum and CNC-machined to exacting tolerances, this pulley is designed to replace your factory unit without requiring modifications to your belt length or cooling fan offset. The classic 5-hole lightning pattern reduces rotational mass compared to solid designs, allowing for quicker throttle response while maintaining the structural integrity needed for high-RPM applications. The polished finish provides a mirror-like shine that instantly elevates the look of your Volkswagen engine, turning a functional component into a centerpiece of your engine build. When you choose an IAP pulley from Appletree Auto, you are investing in a component that balances precision engineering with the timeless style that the VW community demands. Don''t settle for guessing your timingget the exact data you need to keep your flat-four running cool and strong.

PRO TIPS
1. Always Verify True TDC
While this pulley is precision-machined, you should never assume your woodruff keyway and crankshaft assembly are perfectly aligned with the zero mark on the pulley. When installing, use a piston stop tool to find the exact Top Dead Center (TDC) of the number one cylinder. If the zero mark on the pulley is slightly off due to crankshaft manufacturing variances, mark the actual TDC with a small dab of paint or a scribe line. Knowing your true zero is the only way to ensure your timing advance numbers are 100% accurate.
2. Check Your Oil Return Seal
Standard VW pulleys rely on a "spiral" or "screw" thread on the hub to push oil back into the case as the engine spins. Before installation, ensure the crankcase hole where the pulley enters is clean and free of burrs. If you are experiencing oil leaks from behind the pulley, verify that your crankcase pressure is correct; excessive blow-by can overcome the mechanical oil return thread. Always apply a light film of engine oil to the hub of the new pulley before sliding it onto the crankshaft to prevent a dry-start situation on the metal-to-metal contact surface.
3. Use the Correct Torque and Tools
Never attempt to tighten your crank pulley bolt by jamming a screwdriver into the cooling fan or the pulley holes, as this can warp the aluminum or damage the fan blades. Use a dedicated VW pulley holder tool to keep the engine stationary while you torque the pulley bolt to 33-35 ft-lbs. Additionally, check your belt alignment after installation; because this is a billet piece, it is slightly thicker than the original stamped steel. Ensure your generator or alternator pulley is perfectly aligned with the new crank pulley to prevent premature belt wear or flipping at high speeds.
