1. Verify True Top Dead Center (TDC)
Never assume the 0-degree mark on a new pulley perfectly aligns with your engine''s actual Top Dead Center. Due to variations in crankshaft machining and case halves, you should always use a piston stop tool through the spark plug hole on cylinder number one to find the absolute highest point of travel. Once verified, you can mark the pulley or adjust your pointer. This ensures your timing is accurate to the degree, preventing pre-detonation and ensuring maximum power delivery across the entire RPM range.
2. Inspect the Crankshaft Keyway and Seal Surface
When installing your new aluminum pulley, take a moment to inspect the Woodruff key on the crankshaft for any burs or wear. A loose key can lead to the pulley wobbling, which will eventually wallow out the center of your expensive new aluminum part. Additionally, ensure the rear hub of the pulley (where it meets the case) is clean and smooth. Since this is a standard diameter pulley, it uses the standard oil return scroll. Ensure your crank seal is in good condition to prevent oil leaks from migrating onto your new polished finish.
3. Use a New Pulley Bolt and Proper Torque
Aluminum pulleys are softer than the steel crankshaft they mount to. We always recommend using a new, high-quality chrome or heavy-duty pulley bolt when installing this unit. Torque the bolt to the factory specification (typically 30-35 ft-lbs for most Type 1 engines). Over-tightening can stress the aluminum hub, while under-tightening can cause the pulley to shear the Woodruff key. A small drop of blue thread locker on the bolt threads can provide extra peace of mind for high-vibration off-road or performance applications.
