OVERVIEW
When you''re pushing your off-road machine to its absolute limits, the drivetrain is often the first place to show signs of stress. The EMPI 930 CV Joint Race with Balls is engineered specifically for the dedicated enthusiast who demands maximum suspension articulation without the catastrophic risk of binding or premature cage failure. By utilizing a precision-machined inner race paired with specialized .874-inch balls, this kit creates what is known in the industry as a "loose" or high-travel joint. This specific tolerance is critical for long-travel sand rails, heavy-duty Baja Bugs, and custom rock crawlers where the CV joint must operate at extreme angles that would seize a standard, tight-tolerance street joint. Whether you''re navigating deep whoops at high speeds or articulating through technical terrain, this race ensures your power delivery remains fluid and uninterrupted.
Durability and adaptability are the cornerstones of any air-cooled VW performance build, and this EMPI component delivers on both fronts. Designed to be fully compatible with both brand-new and seasoned Lobro-style 930 CV housings, this kit offers a cost-effective way to upgrade or rebuild your drivetrain without the expense of purchasing entirely new assemblies. The hardened steel construction of the inner race is built to withstand the high-torque loads generated by high-displacement stroker engines and the rotational mass of oversized off-road tires. At Appletree Automotive, we know that reliability in the dirt starts with the quality of your internal components, and this race and ball set provides the professional-grade foundation needed for a "bulletproof" 930 setup.
FITMENT

PRO TIPS
1. Master the "Clocking" Technique During Assembly
When assembling your 930 CV joint with this high-travel race, pay close attention to the "clocking" of the inner race relative to the outer housing. You must align the wide lands of the inner race with the narrow windows of the outer cage, and vice versa. If you align wide-to-wide, the joint will not articulate properly and will likely lock up or break the cage as soon as the suspension moves. Before applying grease, dry-fit the assembly to ensure it moves freely through its entire range of motion. If it feels notched or stuck, disassemble and re-clock the race one position over.
2. Use High-Moly Performance Grease Only
Don''t settle for standard "parts store" chassis grease for a high-travel 930 joint. Because these joints operate at higher angles and generate significantly more heat than a standard street setup, you must use a high-content Molybdenum Disulfide (Moly) grease. We recommend a grease with at least 3% to 5% Moly content. When packing the joint, ensure that the grease is forced into the cavities between the balls and the race. A properly packed joint should have grease squeezed through it until it comes out the other side, ensuring no air pockets remain that could lead to metal-on-metal contact under load.
3. Regular Inspection and Maintenance Intervals
High-travel joints with "loose" tolerances like this one are designed for performance, which means they require more frequent inspection than a sealed street unit. Every few trips, or after every race, you should pull the CV boots back and inspect the grease for signs of "fretting" (fine metal particles that turn the grease a reddish-brown or silver hue). If the grease looks contaminated or dried out, it''s time for a full teardown, solvent wash, and repack. Check the race and the balls for pitting or "ghosting" marks; if the surface of the race feels rough to the touch, replace it immediately to prevent a catastrophic mid-trail failure.
