PRO TIPS

1. The Art of the Pack

Never install a dry bearing or simply smear grease on the outside of the rollers. To ensure a long life for your combo spindle bearings, you must "pack" the grease deep into the cage. Use a high-quality, high-temp red lithium or synthetic racing grease. Use a bearing packer tool or the "palm method" to force grease through the bottom of the bearing until it squirts out of the top of the rollers. This ensures that the internal surfaces are lubricated from the very first rotation, preventing the localized heat spikes that lead to premature pitting and failure.

2. Always Replace the Race

One of the most common mistakes in VW front-end maintenance is installing a new bearing into an old, used race (cup). Bearings and races develop unique wear patterns together; mixing a new bearing with a worn race will significantly shorten the lifespan of the part and can cause vibration. When installing your 17-2797-0 inner bearing, always use a brass drift or a dedicated bearing driver tool to seat the new race into the hub. Ensure it is seated completely flush and square to avoid hub imbalance or spindle binding.

3. Dialing in the Pre-load

Combo spindles require precise pre-load adjustment to function correctly under off-road stress. When tightening your spindle nut, tighten it while spinning the hub until you feel a slight drag, then back it off just enough so that you can move the thrust washer behind the nut with a screwdriver using only finger pressure. You want zero play (wobble) but no binding. Check your bearing adjustment after the first few hours of off-road use, as the rollers will "set" into the grease and may require a slight additional turn to maintain the perfect tolerance.
