OVERVIEW
Precision is the name of the game when it comes to mating your air-cooled Volkswagen engine to the transaxle. If you have ever tried to wrestle a Type 1 engine back into the engine bay only to have it stop an inch short of the bellhousing, you know the frustration of a misaligned clutch disc. This EMPI Clutch Alignment Tool is the essential solution for every VW enthusiast, from the weekend grease monkey to the seasoned professional builder. By simulating the transmission input shaft, this tool ensures that your clutch disc is perfectly centered within the pressure plate before you torque down those bolts. Without it, you risk damaging the delicate splines of the input shaft or bending the clutch disc hub, leading to premature failure and a very expensive afternoon of rework. This tool isn''t'' just a convenience; it''s'' a safeguard for your drivetrain investment.
Manufactured from high-impact plastic, this alignment tool is designed to provide a snug, accurate fit across a vast range of Volkswagen applications. Whether you are performing a routine clutch replacement on a daily-driven Beetle or finishing a high-performance build for a weekend dune buggy, this tool provides the exact tolerances required to make engine installation a smooth, one-man job. It eliminates the guesswork and the "eyeballing" method that often leads to vibration and shifting issues down the road. At Appletree Automotive, we understand that the right tool makes the difference between a successful project and a mechanical nightmare, and this alignment tool is a staple in any air-cooled toolbox. It is lightweight, durable, and engineered to handle the 24-spline configuration found on the most popular VW models, ensuring that your input shaft slides home effortlessly every single time.

PRO TIPS
1. The Star Pattern Sequence
When you are using the alignment tool, it is critical not to tighten the pressure plate bolts fully one by one. Once the tool is inserted through the clutch disc and into the pilot bearing, tighten the pressure plate bolts in a star (criss-cross) pattern, just like you would with lug nuts. Tighten them in small incrementsusually half a turn at a timeuntil the pressure plate is snug against the flywheel. This ensures that the pressure plate applies even tension across the disc and keeps the alignment tool perfectly centered. If you tighten one side all at once, you can actually pull the disc slightly off-center, making it difficult to pull the tool out or, worse, difficult to slide the engine onto the transmission.
2. Inspect the Pilot Bearing and Gland Nut
While you have the clutch alignment tool in hand, use it as a diagnostic gauge for your pilot bearing or the needle bearing inside your gland nut. Before you put the clutch disc on, slide the tip of the alignment tool into the pilot bearing. It should fit snugly with no excessive side-to-side play. If the tool feels loose or if you see visible wear inside the bearing, now is the time to replace it. A worn pilot bearing is a common cause of "clutch chatter" and can lead to input shaft damage over time. Always apply a tiny, pea-sized amount of high-temperature grease to the tip of the tool to ensure it slides in and out easily, but be extremely careful not to get any grease on the clutch disc friction material.
3. Clean the Splines for a Smooth Marriage
Before you even slide the tool into your new clutch disc, take a moment to inspect the splines on both the disc and the transmission input shaft. Use a wire brush and some brake cleaner to remove any old dried grease, rust, or debris from the input shaft splines. Once clean, do a "dry fit" by sliding the new clutch disc onto the transmission input shaft (without the engine in the way) to ensure it moves freely. After you are satisfied, use the alignment tool to center the disc on the flywheel. This extra step guarantees that when you finally lift that engine into place, the splines will mesh instantly, saving you from the "shake and bake" method of trying to force the engine onto the transaxle.
