OVERVIEW
Unlock the true potential of your air-cooled powerplant with the IAP .400 Lift, 257 Duration Camshaft. Designed specifically for the Volkswagen enthusiast who demands a noticeable increase in mid-range torque and throttle response without sacrificing daily drivability, this camshaft is the perfect upgrade for street-driven Beetles, off-road Dune Buggies, and weekend cruisers. When you are looking to move beyond the restrictive profile of a stock cam, this IAP grind offers a refined balance of performance and reliability. It provides that classic air-cooled idle while ensuring your engine pulls harder through the gears, making it an ideal choice for 1600cc to 1776cc builds where low-to-mid RPM performance is the priority. Whether you are navigating city traffic or climbing a sand dune, this camshaft delivers the consistent power delivery that Appletree Auto customers have relied on for decades.
Precision-engineered for longevity and performance, this camshaft requires the use of a bolt-on cam gear, allowing for more accurate timing adjustments and greater strength compared to the older press-on styles. At Appletree Auto, we know that the heart of any high-performance VW engine is the valvetrain, and this IAP camshaft is built to withstand the rigors of high-heat environments typical of air-cooled engines. By utilizing a 108-degree lobe center, this cam optimizes the intake and exhaust overlap to maximize volumetric efficiency. It is imperative to remember that a performance camshaft is only as good as the components surrounding it; therefore, this unit must be installed with brand new lifters to ensure a proper wear pattern during the critical break-in period. If you are ready to give your Type 1 engine the "wake-up call" it deserves, this .400 lift cam is the professional''s choice for a robust and reliable upgrade.

PRO TIPS
1. The Critical Break-In Procedure
Never underestimate the importance of the first 20 minutes of your engine''s life after installing a new camshaft. You must use a high-quality break-in oil with high levels of ZDDP (Zinc and Phosphorus) to protect the cam lobes and lifter faces. Upon the initial start-up, immediately bring the engine speed up to between 2,000 and 2,500 RPM and maintain that range for 20 minutes. Do not let the engine idle, as low RPMs do not provide enough splash lubrication from the crankshaft to properly coat the cam. This process allows the lifters to "mate" to the cam lobes, ensuring a long-lasting and healthy valvetrain. If you skip this step or use standard modern oil without a zinc additive, you risk "wiping" a lobe and ruining the camshaft instantly.
2. Selecting and Timing the Cam Gear
Since this camshaft requires a bolt-on gear, it is the perfect time to check your gear backlash. When installing your new cam gear (usually sold separately), ensure that the mesh between the brass crank gear and the cam gear is within the factory tolerance of .000 to .002 inches. If the gear is too tight, it will whine and cause premature wear; if it is too loose, it will clatter and cause timing inconsistencies. We highly recommend using a degree wheel during installation to verify that the cam is timed perfectly to the crankshaft. Even a few degrees of deviation can shift your power band higher or lower than intended, so taking the time to "degree the cam" ensures you are getting exactly the performance you paid for.
3. Valvetrain Clearance and Spring Tension
While a .400 lift cam is considered relatively mild, you must still perform a "dry fit" to check for coil bind and valve-to-piston clearance. When using stock 1.1:1 rockers, ensure your valve springs can handle the extra travel without the coils touching each other at full lift. It is also a smart move to upgrade to heavy-duty single valve springs and chromoly pushrods when installing this cam. Stock pushrods can flex under the increased pressure and higher RPMs that this cam encourages, which leads to power loss and potential engine damage. Always double-check your rocker arm geometry to ensure the adjusting screw sits centered on the valve stem at half-lift, which minimizes side-loading on the valve guides.
