OVERVIEW
When you are pushing a high-performance air-cooled Volkswagen engine to its limits, managing oil temperature and cleanliness becomes your top priority. Stock VW engines were never equipped with a modern spin-on oil filter, relying instead on a simple mesh screen that catches only the largest debris. This A&A Manufacturing Weld-On Oil Filter Mount Bracket is the essential foundation for any external oil filtration system. By providing a rock-solid, vibration-resistant mounting point, this bracket allows you to relocate a high-capacity oil filter away from engine heat and into a position where it can be serviced easily. Whether you are building a dedicated drag racer, a long-distance cruiser, or a rugged Baja Bug, this bracket ensures your oil filter stays exactly where you put it, even under the harshest chassis vibrations and off-road impacts.
Crafted from heavy-duty 1/8-inch thick raw steel, this FAB-1006 bracket is designed for builders who demand fabrication-grade quality. Unlike flimsy bolt-on universal brackets that can flex or crack over time, a weld-on solution provides a permanent, integrated attachment point to your frame horns, roll cage, or custom engine cradle. The 2-3/4 inch width is perfectly sized to accommodate most standard aftermarket oil filter adapters, while the 5/16-inch pre-drilled holes take the guesswork out of alignment. Because it comes in a raw finish, it is ready to be TIG or MIG welded immediately into your project, allowing for a clean, professional look once your chassis is painted or powder-coated. Don''t settle for "good enough" when it comes to your engine''s lifeblood; use a bracket that is as tough as the rest of your build.

PRO TIPS
1. Optimal Placement for Cooling and Protection
When selecting a mounting location for your oil filter bracket, aim for an area with significant airflow but high protection from road debris. On a standard Beetle, the left side frame horn is a popular choice, as it keeps the filter away from the hot exhaust header while remaining easy to reach during oil changes. For off-roaders, we recommend welding the bracket to the upper portion of the engine cage. This keeps the filter protected from rocks and brush while ensuring that any potential leaks are easily visible during a pre-race inspection. Always ensure the filter is mounted vertically or at a slight angle to prevent massive oil spills when you unscrew the filter during maintenance.
2. Proper Welding Preparation
Because this bracket is made of raw 1018 steel, it is ready to weld right out of the box, but your chassis might not be. Before striking an arc, use a flap disc or wire wheel to grind the mounting surface on your frame or cage down to shiny, bare metal. Any paint, rust, or powder coating left behind will contaminate the weld, leading to porosity and potential failure. Since oil filters can become heavy when full of oil and are subject to high-frequency engine vibration, we recommend a full perimeter weld rather than just tacking the corners. This ensures the bracket becomes a structural part of the chassis and won''t fatigue over time.
3. Account for Fitting Clearance
Before you permanently weld the bracket into place, mock it up with the oil filter adapter and the actual fittings (usually -8AN or -10AN) attached. It is a common mistake to weld the bracket too close to a frame tube or a firewall, only to realize later that there isn''t enough room to thread the hoses on or that the hose ends are kinked against the bodywork. Give yourself at least two inches of "swing room" for the hoses to exit the adapter comfortably. Also, consider the diameter of the oil filter itself; some high-performance filters are wider than standard ones, so make sure you have enough radial clearance to spin the filter on and off without hitting the chassis.
