PRO TIPS

1. Clean Your Surface for Maximum Penetration

Before you strike an arc, it is absolutely critical to prep both the tab and the mounting surface. These tabs come in raw mild steel, which may have a light coating of oil or mill scale from the manufacturing process. Use a flap disc or a wire wheel to grind the area on your VW''s chassis or tubing down to bright, shiny metal. Also, scuff the weld-edge of the tab itself. Removing these contaminants ensures a deep, structural weld that won''t crack or fail when you are bouncing through the whoops in your Baja Bug or vibrating down the highway.

2. Use a "Heat Sink" Bolt During Welding

When welding small tabs like these, the heat can sometimes distort the 1/4-inch hole or cause the metal to warp slightly. To keep the hole perfectly round and the tab flat, thread a sacrificial grade-8 bolt and nut through the hole before you begin welding. This acts as a heat sink and maintains the hole''s geometry. Just be sure not to weld the bolt to the tab! Once the weld has cooled naturally, remove the bolt, and you will find that your mounting hardware fits perfectly without the need for a reamer or drill bit.

3. Prevent Rust with Immediate Coating

Because these tabs are raw mild steel, they will begin to develop surface rust almost immediately if exposed to moisture or even high humidity. After you have finished your welds and the metal has cooled, clean the area with a wax and grease remover. If you aren''t ready for final paint or powder coat, apply a quick coat of "weld-through" primer or a zinc-rich cold galvanizing spray. This protects your hard work and ensures that when it comes time for the final aesthetic finish, you aren''t fighting deep-pitted rust on your newly fabricated mounts.
