OVERVIEW
When you are deep into a custom air-cooled build, whether it is a rugged off-road sand rail, a classic Baja Bug, or a high-performance street machine, the difference between a professional finish and a backyard hack job often comes down to the quality of your fabrication components. The A&A Manufacturing Body Tab (FAB-3041) is engineered to provide a clean, consistent, and structurally sound mounting point for various body panels and accessories. Crafted from high-quality mild steel, these bent tabs are designed to be welded directly to your chassis or roll cage, eliminating the tedious and often inaccurate process of measuring, cutting, and filing your own tabs from scrap metal. By using a pre-bent, precision-stamped tab, you ensure that every mounting point on your vehicle is uniform, which is critical for maintaining body line alignment and structural integrity during high-speed off-road maneuvers.
The versatility of the 1/4-inch hole diameter makes this specific tab a staple in the garage of any serious VW fabricator. At .085 inches thick, it strikes the perfect balance between lightweight design and heavy-duty durability, providing enough material to handle the vibrations and stresses inherent in air-cooled Volkswagen applications. These tabs are frequently used for securing aluminum body skins, mounting electrical components like ignition coils or fuel pumps, and even fastening interior door panels or dash assemblies. Because they are constructed from mild steel, they offer excellent weldability for both MIG and TIG processes, ensuring a deep-penetrating bond to your tubing or plate steel. When you are building a machine meant to tackle the dunes or the drag strip, you cannot afford to overlook the small details, and these A&A Manufacturing tabs provide the professional-grade foundation your project deserves.
FITMENT
This is a universal fabrication component designed for custom welding applications. While it is not a direct bolt-on part for a stock vehicle, it is most commonly utilized on the following air-cooled VW and off-road platforms:
- Volkswagen Beetle: Ideal for Baja Bug conversions and custom fender bracing.
- Volkswagen Karmann Ghia: Used for mounting custom interior panels or hidden bracketry.
- Volkswagen Type 3 (Squareback, Fastback, Notchback): Great for custom engine bay accessory mounting.
- Sand Rails & Dune Buggies: Essential for mounting aluminum body sides and roof panels to 1.50-inch or 1.75-inch tubing.
- Manx-Style Fiberglass Buggies: Perfect for creating secure mounting points for windshield wipers or hood latches.
- Custom Tube Chassis: Universal application for any off-road race car or recreational crawler.

PRO TIPS
1. Proper Surface Preparation for Superior Welds
Before you strike an arc on these tabs, it is imperative to remove any mill scale or protective oil coating from the weld zone. Even though these are high-quality mild steel, a quick pass with a flap disc or a dedicated cleaning solvent will ensure that you do not introduce contaminants into your weld puddle. This is especially important if you are TIG welding, as any impurities will lead to porosity and weaken the mounting point. Always tack the tab in place first, check your alignment with the body panel or accessory, and then finish with a slow, controlled bead to manage the heat soak on the .085-inch material.
2. Heat Management and Warpage Prevention
Because these tabs are .085 inches thick, they can be susceptible to warping if you apply too much heat too quickly, particularly when welding them to thicker wall tubing like .120-wall DOM. I recommend using a series of short "stitch" welds or high-amperage pulses if you are using a TIG welder. If you are mounting multiple tabs in a row for a body panel, use a long straightedge or a piece of angle iron bolted across the tabs to keep them perfectly indexed while you weld. This ensures that when it comes time to bolt your panel on, all the 1/4-inch holes line up perfectly without having to "waller out" the holes with a drill bit.
3. Corrosion Protection Post-Fabrication
Once your fabrication is complete and the welds have cooled, do not leave these tabs bare. Mild steel will begin to develop surface rust almost immediately, especially in humid environments or if you are near the coast. I always recommend a high-quality zinc-rich primer or a professional powder coat finish. If you are building a race car where weight and maintenance are key, a simple coat of "Steel-It" or a similar weld-through coating can protect the tabs while allowing for future modifications. Make sure to clean the inside of the 1/4-inch hole after painting to ensure your hardware fits smoothly without binding on the finish.
