PRO TIPS

1. Verify Your Stand and Backing Plate

If you are upgrading from an original generator to this 60-amp alternator, you MUST change your generator stand to an alternator-specific stand. A generator is smaller in diameter than an alternator; therefore, the alternator will not sit correctly on a generator stand. Additionally, you will need the correct 3-piece alternator backing plate kit to ensure the cooling fan is properly spaced within the fan shroud. Failure to use the correct stand and plates can lead to belt misalignment and catastrophic cooling fan failure.

2. Master the Two-Wire Wiring Conversion

When installing this internally regulated unit, you will no longer need your old external regulator. The thick wire (usually Red) from your starter/battery connects to the large B+ post on the alternator. The smaller wire (usually Green or Blue) that goes to your dashboard charging light connects to the smaller D+ spade terminal. It is critical that your dash bulb is functional, as the charging circuit relies on that bulb to "excite" the alternator into charging. If the bulb is burnt out, your alternator will not charge the battery!

3. Proper Belt Tension and Alignment

Air-cooled engines rely entirely on the fan belt to spin the cooling fan. If the belt is too loose, the engine will overheat; if it is too tight, it will put excessive side-load on the alternator bearings, leading to premature failure. Always check that the pulleys are perfectly aligned. Use shims between the two halves of the alternator pulley to adjust tension. A properly tensioned belt should have about 1/2 inch of deflection when pressed firmly with your thumb at the midpoint between the top and bottom pulleys.
