Alternator & Generator Clamp, Stainless Steel, for VW
* Designed for VW alternators and generators.
* Features an aircraft-style T-bolt.
* Fits Volkswagen, Dune Buggy, and Beetle models.
OVERVIEW
When it comes to the heart of your air-cooled Volkswagen''s electrical and cooling system, stability is everything. The EMPI Stainless Steel Alternator and Generator Clamp is a premium upgrade designed to replace the flimsy, rust-prone factory straps that have been the standard for decades. This isn''t just a cosmetic piece; it is a critical structural component that ensures your alternator or generator remains perfectly seated against the stand. A loose charging unit can lead to belt misalignment, premature pulley wear, and even catastrophic fan shroud damage if the unit shifts under high RPM. By utilizing a high-grade stainless steel construction, this clamp provides a superior level of tension that resists stretching over time, maintaining a rock-solid grip regardless of engine vibration or thermal expansion.
The standout feature of this specific model is the integrated aircraft-style T-bolt mechanism. Unlike traditional worm-gear clamps or the basic nut-and-bolt stock versions that often strip or provide uneven pressure, the T-bolt design distributes clamping force 360 degrees around the circumference of the generator or alternator body. This ensures that the unit is pulled down evenly into the saddle of the stand, preventing "walking" or twisting. Finished in a high-luster stainless steel, it adds a professional, custom look to any engine bay, from a daily driver Beetle to a high-point show car or a rugged off-road sand rail. It is the perfect marriage of form and function, providing the peace of mind that your charging system is locked down with the same technology used in high-performance racing and aerospace applications.
FITMENT
This clamp is designed for standard 105mm diameter alternators and generators used on air-cooled VW engines. It fits the following models equipped with 12-volt systems:
- Volkswagen Type 1 Beetle: 1967-1977 (Sedan and Convertible)
- Volkswagen Type 1 Karmann Ghia: 1967-1974
- Volkswagen Type 2 Bus / Transporter: 1967-1971 (1600cc Dual Port and Single Port engines)
- Volkswagen Type 3 (Squareback, Fastback, Notchback): 1967-1973
- Volkswagen Thing (Type 181): 1973-1974
- Custom Applications: Ideal for Dune Buggies, Sand Rails, and Trikes utilizing a standard VW upright engine configuration with a 12V alternator or generator.

PRO TIPS
1. Prevent Thread Galling with Lubrication
One of the most common mistakes when installing stainless steel hardware is "galling," where the threads of the nut and bolt cold-weld together during tightening. To prevent this, always apply a small dab of anti-seize lubricant or a drop of high-quality engine oil to the T-bolt threads before you begin tightening the nut. This ensures a smooth installation and makes it much easier to remove the clamp later if you ever need to service your alternator or generator. Since this is a stainless-on-stainless connection, this step is absolutely vital for a professional-grade installation.
2. Check Your Stand Alignment First
Before you tighten the T-bolt down, ensure that your alternator or generator is perfectly seated in the "saddle" of the stand. Even the strongest clamp can''t fix a unit that is sitting crooked. I recommend hand-tightening the clamp first, then rotating the alternator/generator slightly to feel it "lock" into the grooves of the stand. Once you are certain the unit is level and the pulley is aligned with the crank pulley, proceed with the final tightening. This prevents the clamp from pulling the unit into a skewed position, which would otherwise lead to accelerated belt wear and potential bearing failure.
3. Don''t Over-Torque the T-Bolt
Because the T-bolt design is so efficient at generating clamping force, it is easy to over-tighten it. You want the strap to be tight enough that the alternator cannot be moved by hand, but you shouldn''t crank it down until the strap begins to deform the alternator housing. Tighten the nut until the strap is snug and the alternator is immobile, then give it another quarter-turn. The goal is a firm, vibration-resistant hold. Over-tightening can actually put unnecessary stress on the alternator or generator casing, which can lead to internal component misalignment over thousands of miles of heat cycles.
