Product Overview
The foundation of a high-revving, responsive air-cooled engine begins with the rotational mass attached to your crankshaft. This EMPI 200mm lightened flywheel is engineered specifically for the VW enthusiast who demands quicker throttle response and faster acceleration without sacrificing structural integrity. By reducing the weight to approximately 13 pounds, this flywheel significantly decreases rotational inertia, allowing your Type 1 engine to snap through the RPM range with a level of urgency that a heavy stock flywheel simply cannot provide. Whether you are building a spirited street cruiser, a weekend autocross warrior, or a dedicated sand rail, this high-grade steel flywheel provides the performance edge needed to transform your driving experience. It is precision-balanced to ensure smooth operation at high engine speeds, protecting your main bearings from the destructive vibrations often found in inferior, unbalanced components.
Beyond the weight savings, this flywheel is a critical upgrade for high-horsepower applications due to its 8-dowel configuration. Standard 4-dowel setups are notorious for shearing under heavy loads or aggressive launches, which can result in catastrophic engine failure and a ruined crankshaft. This flywheel comes pre-drilled with a precision 8-dowel pattern, providing double the surface area for torque transfer between the crank and the flywheel. It is designed for 12-volt systems with a 130-tooth ring gear and features the modern O-ring style seal interface for superior oil retention. When you are pushing the limits of your air-cooled flat-four, you cannot afford to have a weak link in your drivetrain. This EMPI unit represents the perfect intersection of durability, precision machining, and performance-oriented weight reduction, making it an essential component for any serious Type 1 engine build.
Fitment Applications
This 200mm 8-dowel flywheel is designed for Type 1 based engines using a 12-volt electrical system. Please note that your crankshaft must also be drilled for an 8-dowel pattern to utilize this flywheel correctly.

Expert Pro Tips from Appletree Auto
Tip 1: Matching the Crankshaft and Flywheel
When upgrading to an 8-dowel flywheel, it is absolutely imperative that your crankshaft is also precision-drilled for the same 8-dowel pattern. You should never attempt to "hand-drill" a 4-dowel crank to match an 8-dowel flywheel, as even a microscopic misalignment will lead to uneven stress on the dowel pins, eventually causing them to shear or wallow out the holes. For the best results, we recommend purchasing a pre-drilled 8-dowel counterweighted crankshaft or having a professional machine shop "step-drill" your existing crank using a high-quality hardened steel jig. This ensures a "press-fit" feel that is necessary for high-RPM stability.
Tip 2: Setting the Crankshaft End Play
Installing a new flywheel is the most critical time to check and set your engine''s end play. You should never simply bolt the flywheel on and assume it is ready to go. Use a dial indicator to measure the fore-and-aft movement of the crankshaft. You will need to use a combination of three shims (available in various thicknesses) to achieve the factory specification of .003" to .005". If the end play is too tight, you risk burning up the thrust bearing; if it is too loose, you will hammer the main bearing saddles into the engine case. Always double-check your measurements after the gland nut is fully torqued to its final specification.
Tip 3: Gland Nut Torque and Lubrication
The gland nut is the only thing holding your flywheel to the crankshaft, and it requires a massive amount of torquetypically 217 to 250 ft-lbs depending on the specific hardware used. We highly recommend using a heavy-duty chromoly gland nut and a high-quality 36mm socket with a long torque multiplier or a professional-grade torque wrench. Before installation, apply a small drop of blue Loctite to the threads and a thin film of high-pressure grease to the mating surface where the nut meets the flywheel. This prevents galling and ensures that the torque reading you are getting is accurate, providing the clamping force required to keep the flywheel seated during high-performance driving.
