This Scat 4340 chromoly gland nut is a direct performance upgrade for Volkswagen Type 1 (Beetle, Karmann Ghia, Thing), Type 2 (Bus), and Type 3 aircooled engines. It is specifically engineered for high-performance applications where standard nuts fail. While it fits standard crankshafts, it is considered mandatory for any engine utilizing an 8-dowel setup or high-revving internals to prevent the flywheel from loosening or shearing the dowel pins.

Pro Tech Tips for Installation

Achieve Proper Torque: For high-performance chromoly gland nuts, we recommend torquing to a minimum of 250-270 ft-lbs. Because standard torque wrenches often top out at 150 ft-lbs, you should use a torque multiplier (like a "Flywheel Torque Tool") to ensure the nut is tight enough to prevent the flywheel from "walking" on the crank, which can destroy both the crank and the flywheel.

Lubricate the Threads and Washer: Never install a gland nut dry. Apply a small amount of high-pressure grease or anti-seize to the threads and the mating surface of the washer. This prevents galling and ensures that your torque reading is measuring actual clamping force rather than friction between the metals.

Inspect the Pilot Bearing: Before installation, ensure the needle pilot bearing inside the gland nut is properly seated and lightly greased. Check the input shaft of your transmission for any burrs; if the shaft doesn't slide into this bearing smoothly, you will experience clutch release issues and potential damage to the transmission's main drive gear.
