OVERVIEW
Restoring the drivetrain of a vintage Volkswagen requires precision and parts that respect the original engineering of the air-cooled era. This IAP 180mm Clutch Kit is specifically engineered for early-model Volkswagens, providing the smooth engagement and reliable torque transfer that these iconic machines deserve. Whether you are reviving a 36hp split-window Beetle or a 40hp early Transporter, this kit addresses the common issues of clutch chatter and slippage that plague older, worn-out components. By utilizing high-quality friction materials and a robust pressure plate design, this kit ensures that every bit of horsepower from your classic flat-four reaches the ground without hesitation. It is the definitive choice for the purist who demands modern reliability while maintaining the authentic driving feel of a period-correct swing-axle transmission setup.
What sets this kit apart is its comprehensive nature, designed to eliminate the guesswork and mid-project "parts runs" that can stall a restoration. This isn''t just a simple disc replacement; it is a full-system overhaul featuring a 180mm pressure plate, a high-quality clutch disc, a specialized early-style throw-out bearing, and the often-overlooked throw-out clips. We even include a clutch alignment tool to ensure that your installation is perfectly centered, preventing input shaft damage and making engine mating a breeze. If you are tired of a stiff, unpredictable pedal or a clutch that gives up the ghost under load, this IAP kit provides the structural integrity and heat dissipation necessary to keep your vintage VW on the road for years to come. Don''t settle for piecemeal solutions when you can install a matched set that is built to perform under the unique demands of an air-cooled engine bay.

PRO TIPS
1. Always Resurface or Replace the Flywheel
One of the most common mistakes when installing a new clutch kit is bolting it onto a glazed or uneven flywheel. Even a brand-new 180mm clutch disc will fail prematurely if the flywheel surface has "hot spots" (blue-tinted hardened areas) or deep grooves from the previous disc. Before installing this IAP kit, take your flywheel to a machine shop to be ground flat, or replace it entirely if it is below the minimum thickness spec. This ensures a 100% flat mating surface, which is critical for preventing the dreaded "clutch shudder" when pulling away from a stoplight. Don''t forget to clean the new pressure plate and the freshly machined flywheel with brake cleaner to remove any shipping oil or fingerprints before assembly.
2. Inspect the Rear Main Seal and O-Ring
Since you have already gone through the effort of pulling the engine to replace the clutch, it is the absolute best time to inspect your rear main seal and the flywheel O-ring. In the air-cooled VW world, an oil-soaked clutch is a ruined clutch. Even a tiny leak from the crankshaft seal can migrate onto the clutch disc, causing it to slip and eventually fail. If you see any signs of oil residue inside the bellhousing or behind the flywheel, replace the seal and the O-ring immediately. It is a five-minute job with the engine out, but a five-hour job if you have to pull the engine again next week because your new clutch is slipping on fresh oil.
3. Verify Your Throw-Out Bearing Style
This kit is designed for the "Early Style" transmission setup, which uses a throw-out bearing that is NOT supported by a guide tube on the transmission input shaft. You can identify this by looking at your pressure plate; it features a metal ring in the center. If your transmission has a guide tube (typically found on 1971 and later models, or converted earlier models), you would require a "Late Style" pressure plate without that center ring. Always double-check your transmission cross-shaft and the presence of a guide tube before installation. Additionally, when installing the included throw-out bearing clips, ensure they are seated firmly and have proper tension; if they are loose or bent, the bearing can rattle or dislodge, leading to catastrophic failure of the release mechanism.
