OVERVIEW
When it comes to the heart of your air-cooled Volkswagen''s drivetrain, the flywheel is the unsung hero that bridges the gap between your engine''s raw power and the transmission. This EMPI 200mm 4-dowel flywheel is a premium, stock-style replacement engineered specifically for those who demand reliability and smooth operation from their Type 1, 2, or 3 engines. Manufactured from high-grade forged steel and precision-balanced right out of the box, this flywheel eliminates the vibrations and chatter often associated with worn, heat-cracked, or resurfaced original units. Whether you are restoring a classic Beetle for daily commuting or building a rugged dune buggy for weekend adventures, this 200mm flywheel provides the consistent surface area and rotational mass required to keep your 1300cc to 1600cc (and beyond) power plant running at its peak efficiency.
This specific unit is designed for the 12-volt era, featuring the standard 130-tooth ring gear that ensures perfect starter motor engagement every time you turn the key. As an "O-ring style" flywheel, it utilizes the updated sealing method introduced by Volkswagen in the late 1960s to prevent pesky oil leaks at the rear main seal area. By sticking with the tried-and-true 4-dowel pin pattern, this flywheel offers a direct bolt-on fit for stock crankshafts, maintaining the original engineering integrity of your VW engine while providing the structural strength of modern metallurgy. At Appletree Automotive, we know that a drivetrain is only as strong as its weakest link, and installing this robust steel flywheel is the best way to ensure your clutch has a flat, true, and dependable mating surface for years to come.

PRO TIPS
1. Don''t Forget the End Play Adjustment
Whenever you install a new flywheel, it is absolutely critical to check and set the crankshaft end play. Even though this is a stock-style replacement, manufacturing tolerances between the crankshaft, the main bearings, and the flywheel itself can vary. You must use a dial indicator to measure the movement of the flywheel/crankshaft assembly and adjust the three metal shims behind the oil seal to achieve the factory specification (typically .003 to .005 inches). Setting this incorrectly can lead to premature engine failure or thrust bearing damage, so take the time to get it right before you bolt the engine back into the car.
2. Proper O-Ring and Seal Installation
Since this is an O-ring style flywheel, you must ensure that the internal O-ring (part number 311-105-295A) is seated perfectly inside the flywheel bore before installation. We highly recommend using a small amount of clean engine oil or a specialized assembly lube on the O-ring and the rear main seal lip to prevent "dry start" friction. When sliding the flywheel onto the crankshaft dowels, be extremely careful not to pinch or nick the O-ring, as even a tiny tear will result in a significant oil leak that will ruin your clutch disc and require you to pull the engine all over again.
3. Torque and Tools Matter
The gland nut that holds the flywheel to the crankshaft requires an immense amount of torquetypically 217 ft-lbs for a stock 1200-1600cc engine. You cannot achieve this with a standard 1/2-inch drive ratchet. You must use a high-quality 36mm socket and a heavy-duty torque wrench or a "Torque Multiplier" tool. Always use a flywheel locking tool to keep the engine from spinning while you tighten the nut. We also strongly advise using a small drop of Blue Loctite on the gland nut threads and ensuring the pilot bearing inside the gland nut is well-greased to protect your transmission input shaft.
