PRO TIPS
1. Proper CV Lubrication and Maintenance
Don''t make the mistake of using standard chassis grease on your high-angle 930 CV joints. For off-road applications where heat and friction are extreme, you must use a high-moly content, high-temperature grease such as Red Line CV-2 or a similar racing-grade lubricant. When installing these axles, ensure the CV boots are properly packed but not over-pressurized, which can cause the boots to expand and fail at high speeds. Regularly inspect your boots for tears; even a small pinhole can allow abrasive sand to enter the joint, which will quickly gall the splines and destroy the internals of your expensive 930 joints.
2. Verify Axle Float and Suspension Clearance
One of the most critical steps in installing 16-3/4 inch axles is verifying "axle float." With your vehicle on jack stands and the suspension at full droop, you must ensure that the axle has at least 1/4 inch of lateral movement (play) between the CV joints. A light pass with a fine needle file can ensure a smooth press-fit. More importantly, always use new, high-quality heavy-duty snap rings to secure the CV joints. Ensure the snap ring is fully seated in the groove; a snap ring that isn''t perfectly seated can be forced out under the heavy side-loading that occurs during hard cornering or when landing jumps, leading to a total loss of drive power and potential damage to your CV boots and surrounding components.
