OVERVIEW
Upgrade your air-cooled powerplant with the ultimate ignition solution: the Pertronix Flame-Thrower Vacuum Advance Distributor equipped with integrated Ignitor II electronics. For decades, the Bosch 009 was the go-to for enthusiasts, but it often left drivers dealing with the notorious "flat spot" during acceleration. Appletree Auto is proud to offer this Pertronix unit, which meticulously combines the best mechanical advance characteristics of the legendary 009, 010, and 050 distributors with a modern vacuum advance canister. This hybrid design ensures that your Volkswagen engine receives the perfect timing curve whether you are cruising at steady highway speeds or rowing through the gears. The lightweight cast aluminum housing provides superior heat dissipation and structural integrity compared to cheaper alternatives, ensuring your timing stays locked in even under the intense heat of a long summer drive in your Beetle or Bus.
What truly sets this distributor apart is the Ignitor II technology nested under the cap. Unlike standard electronic ignitions that use a fixed dwell, the Ignitor II features a powerful micro-controller that senses the coil current and adjusts the dwell throughout the entire RPM range. This means you get peak spark energy at high RPMs where standard ignitions start to fall off, and it prevents coil overheating at low idle. By utilizing rotating cobalt magnets and a Hall Effect integrated circuit, this unit eliminates the maintenance of points forever while providing timing accuracy within 1/4 degree. It is the perfect choice for the driver who demands modern reliability without sacrificing the classic look of a high-performance VW engine bay. When you install this unit, you aren''t just replacing a part; you are optimizing your engine''s entire combustion cycle for smoother idling, crisper throttle response, and better fuel economy.

PRO TIPS
1. Match Your Coil for Maximum Spark
To truly experience the power of the Ignitor II micro-controller, you must pair this distributor with a high-performance, low-resistance coil. We strongly recommend the Pertronix Flame-Thrower II coil, which features a 0.6-ohm primary resistance. Using a standard 3.0-ohm coil will limit the current and prevent the Ignitor II from reaching its full potential of high-energy spark delivery at high RPMs. Always double-check your coil resistance before installation; using an incompatible coil can lead to poor performance and may void your warranty. Remember, the Ignitor II is designed to handle more current than the original Ignitor I, so don''t be afraid to go with the high-output 45,000-volt coil options.
2. Proper Vacuum Port Sourcing
The vacuum advance feature on this distributor is designed to improve fuel economy and engine cooling during light-load cruising. For the best results, ensure you are connecting the vacuum line to a "timed" vacuum port on your carburetor (usually located just above the throttle plates) rather than a direct manifold vacuum source. If you hook it directly to the manifold, you may experience too much advance at idle, leading to an erratic idle speed and engine overheating. If you are running dual carburetors, such as Weber IDFs or Dellorto DRLAs, ensure you have a vacuum tap installed on at least one of the carburetors to utilize this distributor''s advanced features properly.
3. Static vs. Dynamic Timing
While you can "static" time your VW engine to get it started, the Pertronix Ignitor II system is best tuned using a high-quality strobe timing light. Because this distributor features a custom advance curve, you want to check your "Total Advance" rather than just the initial timing at idle. With the vacuum line disconnected and plugged, rev the engine to approximately 3,500 RPM and set your maximum mechanical advance to 30-32 degrees Before Top Dead Center (BTDC). Once the maximum advance is set, let the engine return to idle and reconnect the vacuum line. This ensures that your engine won''t "ping" or detonate under load while still providing the snappy response that Appletree Auto customers expect from a performance distributor.
