OVERVIEW
Precision is the hallmark of a smooth-running air-cooled Volkswagen drivetrain, and the EMPI Swing Axle Tube Shim Gasket is a critical component that often goes overlooked by novice builders. These aren''t just simple paper gaskets designed to keep gear oil from leaking onto your driveway; they are vital mechanical shims used to set the proper tension and clearance between the axle tube ball and the transmission case socket. When you are rebuilding a classic 1949 to 1964 Beetle or early Karmann Ghia, achieving the correct "drag" on the axle tube is the difference between a suspension that binds and one that moves fluidly through its travel. If you use too few shims, the axle tube will be pinched too tightly, leading to premature wear on the fulcrum plates and potential galling of the metal surfaces. Conversely, using too many shims will create excessive play, leading to annoying rattles and, more importantly, persistent oil leaks that no amount of silicone can fix.
At Appletree Automotive, we understand that the longevity of your vintage transaxle depends on the quality of the small parts. These EMPI 111-501-131 gaskets are manufactured to exacting thicknesses to ensure you can fine-tune your swing axle assembly with professional-grade accuracy. Whether you are performing a full transmission overhaul or simply replacing a cracked axle boot, having a stack of these shims on hand is mandatory. The early 6-bolt flange design requires a specific setup procedure where the resistance of the axle tube is measured by its ability to "drop" under its own weight. By utilizing these high-quality shims, you ensure that your Type 1, Type 2, or Type 3 swing axle setup remains oil-tight and mechanically sound for thousands of miles of cruising or off-road adventuring in your dune buggy or woods buggy.

PRO TIPS
The Gravity Drop Test
When installing these shims, never guess the amount needed. The classic VW factory method involves starting with approximately six shims on each side. With the axle tube dry and the 6-bolt flange torqued to spec, lift the axle tube to the top of its travel and let it go. You want the axle to stay in the upright position on its own but fall slowly and smoothly when given a light nudge. If it falls instantly, remove one shim at a time until you achieve that controlled "drag." If it won''t move at all, you are too tight and need to add a shim. Achieving this balance is the only way to ensure your fulcrum plates don''t overheat and seize during long highway drives.
Sealant Strategy for Shims
While it is tempting to coat every shim in a thick layer of RTV silicone, doing so will actually change the effective thickness of the shim stack and throw off your mechanical clearances. Instead, use a very thin layer of a high-quality "tack" or spray-on gasket sealer like Permatex High Tack. This provides a reliable oil seal without adding significant "squish" thickness to the stack. Remember, these are mechanical spacers first and gaskets second; keeping the stack height consistent is your priority for a quiet and long-lasting transaxle.
Check for Flange Distortion
Before you stack your new EMPI shims, take a moment to inspect the 6-bolt retainer flange for flatness. Years of over-tightening can cause the bolt holes to "dimple" or the flange to warp, which prevents the shims from sealing correctly. Use a flat file or a piece of sandpaper on a glass surface to ensure the mating surface of the steel flange is perfectly true. Once the flange is flat, your new shims will be able to do their job properly, preventing the common "swing axle puddle" that plagues so many early air-cooled Volkswagens.
