OVERVIEW
Upgrade your vintage Volkswagen''s charging system with the ultimate power solution: the IAP 75 Amp Alternator Conversion Kit. If you are still running an original 30-amp or 38-amp generator, you are likely experiencing dimming headlights at idle, slow turn signals, and a battery that struggles to keep up with modern electrical demands. This comprehensive kit allows you to ditch the archaic external regulator and low-output generator in favor of a high-efficiency, 75-amp internal regulator alternator. This jump in amperage is essential for anyone running high-output audio systems, auxiliary lighting, electronic ignition, or high-intensity halogen/LED headlights. By providing a consistent 12-volt charge even at lower RPMs, this conversion ensures your Type 1 engine remains reliable whether you are cruising the boulevard or trekking through the desert in a built woods buggy.
Engineered for a seamless transition, this kit includes the heavy-duty 75-amp alternator, a dedicated alternator stand, a secure mounting strap, and a sleek 3-piece black backing plate kit to maintain proper cooling airflow through the fan shroud. The internal regulator design simplifies your engine bay wiring significantly, eliminating the messy external regulator usually found under the rear seat or on the firewall. While this kit provides the core components for the swap, it is designed for the serious VW enthusiast who understands that a robust charging system is the backbone of a dependable air-cooled machine. Please note that for a complete installation, you will still require your choice of pulley, belt, and gaskets, allowing you to customize the final look of your engine to match your specific build style.

PRO TIPS
1. The Essential Exciter Wire
One of the most common mistakes during an alternator conversion is failing to properly wire the dash warning light. The 75-amp alternator requires a small amount of current to "excite" the internal regulator and begin the charging process. This current comes through the charging indicator light on your dashboard. If that bulb is burnt out or the wire is disconnected, your alternator will not charge the battery, regardless of how fast you spin the engine. Always ensure your dash bulb is functioning and that the wire is securely connected to the small terminal on the alternator. Without this circuit, you''ll find yourself stranded with a dead battery despite having a brand-new high-output system.
2. Check Your Fuel Pump Clearance
When upgrading from a slim 12V generator to a larger 75-amp alternator, clearance can become an issue, particularly with the fuel pump. Original "long-style" fuel pumps designed for generators often hit the body of the wider alternator. To avoid this, we highly recommend installing a "shorty" style fuel pump or a pump specifically designed for alternator clearance. Additionally, make sure you use the correct fuel pump pushrod; alternator-style fuel pumps typically require the shorter 100mm (3.9 inch) pushrod, whereas older generator pumps used the 108mm (4.25 inch) version. Checking this before you bolt everything down will save you from a major headache during the final assembly.
3. Perfect Pulley Alignment is Key
To ensure a long life for your alternator bearings and to prevent throwing belts at high RPM, you must achieve perfect pulley alignment. When installing the 3-piece backing plate and the alternator onto the stand, use shims behind the pulley to align it perfectly with the lower crank pulley. Even a slight offset can cause the belt to wear prematurely or flip off the track. We also recommend using a high-quality Continental or Gates belt and checking the tension after the first 50 miles of driving. A properly tensioned and aligned belt ensures that all 75 amps are available to your electrical system without putting undue stress on the alternator internals.
