1. The Essential Exciter Wire

One of the most common mistakes during an alternator conversion is failing to properly wire the dash warning light. The 75-amp alternator requires a small amount of current to "excite" the internal regulator and begin the charging process. This current comes through the charging indicator light on your dashboard. If that bulb is burnt out or the wire is disconnected, your alternator will not charge the battery, regardless of how fast you spin the engine. 3. Perfect Pulley Alignment is Key

To ensure a long life for your alternator bearings and to prevent throwing belts at high RPM, you must achieve perfect pulley alignment. When installing the 3-piece backing plate and the alternator onto the stand, use shims behind the pulley to align it perfectly with the lower crank pulley.
