OVERVIEW
Elevate your air-cooled engine''s electrical capacity and engine bay aesthetics with the EMPI 75 Amp High-Output Chrome Alternator. In the modern era of classic Volkswagen ownership, the stock 38 or 55-amp charging systems often fall short when tasked with powering high-draw accessories such as powerful aftermarket audio systems, high-intensity LED lighting, or high-energy electronic ignition systems like the PerTronix or MSD setups. This 75-amp powerhouse is engineered to provide a rock-solid, consistent voltage supply, ensuring that your battery stays topped off even at idle. Unlike many budget alternatives on the market, this unit is 100% brand new and contains no rebuilt components, meaning you won''t have to deal with the hassle of core charges or the reliability concerns of recycled internals. It features an internal regulator, which significantly simplifies your wiring harness by eliminating the need for an external mechanical regulator mounted under the rear seat or on the firewall.
Beyond the impressive performance gains, this alternator serves as a centerpiece for any show-quality engine build. The triple-chrome plated finish is polished to a mirror shine, providing a brilliant contrast against painted engine tins or matching other chrome accessories like your coil cover or air cleaner. Because this is a standard Type 1 diameter unit, it fits perfectly into standard alternator/generator stands, though we highly recommend pairing it with a chrome alternator stand and a high-quality woodruff key for a seamless installation. Whether you are cruising the local strip in a Cal-Look Beetle or tackling the dunes in a custom sand rail, this 75-amp alternator provides the peace of mind that comes with modern charging technology wrapped in a classic, high-luster package that demands attention every time you pop the decklid.

PRO TIPS
1. The Essential Charging Indicator Light
One of the most common tech calls we receive involves the alternator failing to charge immediately after installation. It is critical to understand that this alternator requires a functional 12V charging indicator bulb (the "Gen" or "Alt" light in your dash) to "excite" the internal field and start the charging process. If the bulb is burnt out, or if you have removed your stock gauges and haven''t wired in a resistor or a secondary bulb, the alternator will not "turn on" and charge your battery. Always verify that your dash light illuminates when the key is in the "On" position and turns off once the engine is running.
2. Proper Belt Alignment and Tension
On an air-cooled VW, the alternator doesn''t just provide electricity; it also drives the cooling fan. If your belt alignment is off, or if the tension is incorrect, you risk overheating your engine or wearing out the alternator bearings prematurely. When installing this chrome unit, ensure your pulley halves are shimmed correctly so the belt runs perfectly straight. You should have approximately 1/2-inch of deflection in the belt when pushed with your thumb. Don''t over-tighten the belt to compensate for a squeak, as the excess side-load can damage the internal components of your new 75-amp unit.
3. Wiring Conversion for Generator Engines
If you are upgrading from an old-style generator to this internally regulated alternator, you must bypass your existing external regulator. The heavy-gauge wire that previously went to the "B+" terminal on the regulator should be connected directly to the "B+" post on the alternator, and the smaller wire for the dash light should go to the "D+" terminal. We recommend using a minimum of 10-gauge (or ideally 8-gauge) wire for the main power lead to safely handle the increased 75-amp capacity. Failure to upgrade thin, brittle 40-year-old wiring can lead to voltage drops or even electrical fires under heavy load.
