OVERVIEW
When it comes to restoring the stopping power of your vintage Volkswagen, precision is everything. This premium front wheel cylinder is specifically engineered for the early-model Beetle and Karmann Ghia, covering the iconic production window from 1950 through October of 1957. In the world of air-cooled restoration, the braking system is the most critical safety component you will ever service. These early Type 1 front braking systems utilize a unique 2-hole mounting pattern that is distinct from later models. Installing a high-quality, factory-spec replacement ensures that your hydraulic pressure is translated into consistent, reliable friction at the brake shoes, keeping your classic VW safe on modern roads. Whether you are performing a concours-level restoration or simply maintaining a weekend cruiser, don''t settle for inferior hydraulic components that could compromise your vehicle''s safety and performance.
Our wheel cylinders are manufactured to meet or exceed original equipment specifications, featuring a robust cast iron body and high-grade internal seals designed to withstand the heat and pressure of daily driving. The 113-611-055G part number is a staple for owners of "Oval Window" Beetles and early "Lowlight" Ghias who require the specific 2-hole flange mounting configuration. Each unit is precision-machined to provide a smooth bore surface, which reduces internal friction and extends the life of the rubber cups and dust boots. Because brake fluid is hygroscopic and naturally absorbs moisture over time, internal corrosion in original cylinders is inevitable. Replacing your aged, pitted, or leaking wheel cylinders with these fresh units is the most effective way to eliminate a "mushy" brake pedal and ensure that your vintage Volkswagen stops straight and true every time you hit the pedal.

PRO TIPS
Tip 1: Always Replace in Axle Pairs
While these wheel cylinders are sold individually, it is a professional best practice to always replace the wheel cylinders on both sides of the front axle at the same time. Hydraulic systems rely on balanced pressure; if you have one brand-new cylinder and one aged, partially clogged, or worn cylinder, your Volkswagen will likely pull to one side during hard braking. Replacing both ensures even shoe expansion and predictable handling. Additionally, while the drums are off, take the time to inspect your brake shoes and return springs for heat damage or thinning, as a complete front-end brake service is much more efficient than piecemeal repairs.
Tip 2: Master the Bleeding Sequence
When installing new wheel cylinders, air will inevitably enter the hydraulic lines. To properly bleed the system on an early Beetle or Ghia, always start at the wheel furthest from the master cylinder and work your way closer. Typically, this sequence is: Passenger Rear, Driver Rear, Passenger Front, and finally Driver Front. Ensure you use fresh, high-quality DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid from a sealed container. Never reuse old fluid, as it contains moisture that will cause the internal bore of your new 113-611-055G cylinders to rust prematurely. Keep a close eye on the reservoir level during the process; if it runs dry, you will suck air back into the master cylinder and have to start the entire process over.
Tip 3: Inspect Your Hard Lines and Soft Hoses
A new wheel cylinder can only perform as well as the fluid delivered to it. Before finalizing your installation, carefully inspect the flexible rubber brake hoses that connect the metal chassis lines to the wheel cylinders. On 1950-1957 models, these hoses are often cracked, swollen, or internally collapsed, which can act like a one-way valve and cause your brakes to drag or "lock up." If you see any dry-rot or "checking" on the outer rubber skin, replace them immediately. Also, ensure the metal hard lines are free of heavy scales of rust and that the flare nuts are tightened correctly to prevent slow leaks that could ruin your new brake shoes with fluid contamination.
