OVERVIEW
When it comes to the safety and reliability of your classic air-cooled Volkswagen, the braking system is the one area where you can never afford to compromise. This EMPI Front Wheel Cylinder is engineered to restore the firm, responsive pedal feel that your Beetle or Karmann Ghia had when it first rolled off the assembly line. Over decades of service, original wheel cylinders often suffer from internal pitting due to moisture absorption in the brake fluid, or the rubber boots become brittle and cracked, leading to dangerous leaks. This premium replacement features a precision-honed 22.2mm bore, ensuring that hydraulic pressure is distributed evenly to your brake shoes, preventing the "pulling" or "spongy" sensation often associated with aging drum brake components. Whether you are performing a full frame-off restoration or simply maintaining your daily driver, installing fresh wheel cylinders is the most cost-effective way to ensure your VW stops straight and true every single time.
At Appletree Automotive, we understand that "good enough" isn''t in a VW enthusiast''s vocabulary. That is why we stock these high-quality cast-iron cylinders designed specifically for the front end of Standard Beetles and Ghias from 1958 through 1977. These units are built to withstand the heat and rigors of modern driving conditions while maintaining the exact fitment specifications of the original German parts. By replacing your old, seized, or leaking cylinders with these new units, you eliminate the risk of brake fluid contaminating your new brake shoesa common issue that leads to glazed linings and reduced stopping power. Each cylinder is sold individually, though we always recommend replacing them in pairs to maintain a balanced hydraulic system. Don''t let a weeping seal or a stuck piston keep your vintage Volkswagen off the road; upgrade to these reliable EMPI cylinders and drive with the confidence that your classic is ready for the stop-and-go demands of today''s traffic.

PRO TIPS
Tip 1: The "Replace in Pairs" Philosophy
While these wheel cylinders are sold individually, it is a master mechanic''s best practice to always replace them in pairs across the same axle. Hydraulic systems rely on balanced pressure; if one cylinder is brand new and the other is decades old with internal debris or a slightly different spring rate, you may experience uneven braking or "brake pull" where the car dives toward one side during hard stops. Replacing both front cylinders at the same time ensures that your shoes are hitting the drums with identical force, providing a much safer and more predictable driving experience. Furthermore, if one cylinder has failed due to age or fluid contamination, the other side is usually not far behindsave yourself the second teardown and do them both at once.
Tip 2: Prevent Fluid Contamination with a Full Flush
Installing a brand-new wheel cylinder into a system filled with old, dark, or moisture-laden brake fluid is a recipe for premature failure. Brake fluid is hygroscopic, meaning it naturally absorbs water from the air over time. This moisture causes rust and pitting inside the cylinder walls, which will quickly tear the new rubber seals. Before you finalize your installation, flush the entire brake system with fresh DOT 3 or DOT 4 fluid until the liquid coming out of the bleeder valves is crystal clear. This simple step protects your investment and ensures that the internal bore of your new EMPI cylinder remains smooth and leak-free for years to come.
Tip 3: Proper Bleeding Sequence and Orientation
When installing these front cylinders, always ensure the bleeder valve is pointing toward the top of the assembly. Air bubbles naturally rise, and if the bleeder is at the bottom, you will never successfully purge the air from the lines, resulting in a dangerously soft brake pedal. Once installed, follow the standard VW bleeding sequence: start with the wheel furthest from the master cylinder (typically the Right Rear), then the Left Rear, followed by the Right Front, and finally the Left Front. Use a dedicated bleeder wrench to avoid stripping the M10 fittings, and always keep the master cylinder reservoir topped off during the process to prevent sucking air back into the system.
