OVERVIEW
When you''re deep into a custom chassis build or reinforcing a classic air-cooled Volkswagen for the dunes, the integrity of your mounting points is everything. This A&A Manufacturing weld-on nut, also commonly referred to as a threaded bushing or slug, is a fundamental component for any serious fabricator. Engineered specifically to fit inside 3/4-inch ID (Inside Diameter) tubing, this 3/8-24 fine-thread nut provides a clean, professional, and incredibly strong internal thread where a standard nut and bolt simply won''t suffice. Whether you are building a custom sand rail, a rugged Baja Bug, or a one-off tube chassis, these bushings allow you to create secure attachment points for suspension components, body panels, seat mounts, or accessory brackets without compromising the structural integrity of your tubing.
Crafted with precision in the USA, this weld-on nut features a 7/8-inch overall length, providing ample thread engagement to handle the high-vibration environments typical of off-road racing and street performance. The high-quality mild steel construction ensures excellent weldability, allowing for deep penetration and a seamless bond to your structural tubing. Unlike hardware store alternatives, these are designed with the tight tolerances required for automotive fabrication. By utilizing a 3/8-24 fine thread, this component offers superior clamping force and resistance to loosening compared to coarse-thread counterparts, making it the go-to choice for Appletree Auto customers who demand the highest level of safety and reliability in their VW projects.
FITMENT
While this is a universal fabrication component, it is most commonly used in the construction and repair of the following vehicles and applications:
- Volkswagen Type 1 Beetle & Baja Bug: Ideal for custom shock mounts, seat tracks, and fender braces.
- Volkswagen Type 2 Bus: Used in custom interior cabinetry mounting and engine bay reinforcements.
- Sand Rails & Dune Buggies: The industry standard for mounting skid plates, light bars, and limit straps to 3/4-inch ID frame tubes.
- Meyers Manx & Fiberglass Buggies: Perfect for creating secure body-to-chassis mounting points.
- Custom Off-Road Vehicles: Fits any application utilizing 3/4-inch internal diameter structural tubing.
- Hot Rods & Street Rods: Used for clean, hidden mounting of fuel lines, brake lines, and electrical looms.

PRO TIPS
1. Protect Your Threads During the Weld
One of the most common mistakes when installing weld-on nuts is allowing weld spatter to enter the internal threads or causing thread distortion due to excessive heat. To prevent this, I always recommend threading an old, sacrificial 3/8-24 bolt (preferably coated in anti-seize) into the bushing before you start welding. This act serves two purposes: it protects the internal threads from stray sparks and acts as a heat sink to help maintain the dimensional integrity of the threads. Once the weld has cooled completely, simply back the bolt out, and you''ll have perfectly clean threads ready for your final assembly.
2. Use the "Plug Weld" Technique for Maximum Strength
For the strongest possible bond, don''t just weld around the end of the tube where the bushing meets the edge. Instead, drill a 1/4-inch or 5/16-inch "rosette" or plug weld hole approximately 1/2-inch back from the end of your tubing. Slide the weld-on nut into the tube, and weld through that hole directly onto the surface of the bushing, then finish by welding the circumference of the tube end. This secondary attachment point ensures that even under extreme shear stresslike what you''d see on a VW suspension limit strap mountthe bushing cannot pull out or rotate inside the tube.
3. Always Chase the Threads After Fabrication
Even if you follow the best welding practices, the intense heat required to bond steel can occasionally cause a microscopic amount of thread shrinkage or "pull." After your fabrication work is finished and the metal is cool to the touch, always run a 3/8-24 tap through the bushing. This "chasing" of the threads clears out any oxidation, heat scale, or minor distortions. It ensures that when you go to do your final assembly on your sand rail or Bug, your high-grade fasteners will thread in by hand without galling or seizing, saving you a massive headache at the track or in the garage.
