OVERVIEW
When you''re deep into a custom air-cooled project, whether it''s a ground-up sand rail build or a rugged Baja Bug restoration, the strength of your fabrication is only as good as the hardware holding it together. This A&A Manufacturing weld-on nut is the gold standard for off-road and automotive fabrication, providing a rock-solid, threaded mounting point exactly where you need it. Designed specifically to fit into 3/4-inch ID (Inside Diameter) tubing, this bung allows you to create professional-grade attachment points for suspension components, body panels, or custom accessory mounts. Unlike standard nuts that can be difficult to align or weld securely, these specialized fabrication nuts feature a precision-machined profile that seats perfectly, ensuring a clean, concentric fit every single time.
As any seasoned VW specialist will tell you, the 3/8-24 fine thread pitch is a favorite in the off-road industry because of its superior vibration resistance and higher clamping force compared to coarse threads. These weld-on nuts are manufactured from high-quality, weldable steel, allowing for excellent penetration and a structural bond that can withstand the brutal harmonics of a high-revving flat-four engine or the jarring impacts of a desert trail. Whether you are building a custom roll cage, mounting a fuel tank, or setting up a custom shift linkage, these FAB-6003 nuts provide the reliability and "over-built" quality that Appletree Automotive customers demand. Don''t settle for hardware store solutions when you can use the same components trusted by professional chassis builders across the globe.
FITMENT
This is a universal fabrication component designed for custom applications. While it is not a direct "bolt-on" for a factory part, it is commonly used in the following air-cooled VW and off-road platforms:
- VW Sand Rails & Dune Buggies: Ideal for custom tube chassis mounting points.
- VW Baja Bugs: Perfect for mounting external oil coolers, skid plates, and light bars.
- Meyers Manx & Kit Cars: Used for securing body tubs to custom sub-frames.
- Custom Tube Chassis: Designed to slip into any 3/4-inch ID structural tubing.
- Suspension Fabrication: Useful for creating adjustable mounting points for limit straps or small linkages.
- Universal Off-Road: Applicable to Jeeps, Rock Crawlers, and any project requiring a 3/8-24 threaded bung.

PRO TIPS
1. Protect Your Threads During the Weld
One of the most common mistakes when installing weld-on nuts is getting weld spatter inside the threads or warping the thread pitch due to excessive heat. To prevent this, I always recommend threading a sacrificial grade-8 bolt (coated in a bit of anti-seize) into the nut before you start welding. This acts as a heat sink and a physical barrier against spatter. Just remember to remove the bolt while the piece is still warmbut not glowingto ensure it doesn''t seize. This small step saves you the headache of trying to run a tap through a hardened weld zone later.
2. Proper Surface Preparation is Non-Negotiable
For a weld that is both aesthetically pleasing and structurally sound, you must prep the mating surfaces. Even though these nuts come ready to weld, you should always clean the ID of your 3/4-inch tubing with a wire brush or a small flap wheel to remove any mill scale, rust, or oils. A clean surface ensures deep penetration and prevents porosity in your weld bead. If you''re TIG welding these, a quick wipe-down with acetone on both the nut and the tube will give you that "stack of dimes" look every fabricator dreams of.
3. Always Chase the Threads Post-Installation
Even with the best welding technique, the intense heat required to fuse steel can cause minor thermal expansion and contraction, which may slightly distort the internal threads. After the part has completely cooled to room temperature, always "chase" the threads with a 3/8-24 tap. This ensures that your final assembly hardware will thread in by hand without binding. It''s much easier to clean up the threads on the workbench than it is to deal with a cross-threaded bolt when you''re trying to finish your build at the track or in the pits.
