OVERVIEW
Achieving the perfect air-to-fuel ratio is the holy grail of air-cooled performance, and the Weber IDF Air Jet 190 is a precision instrument designed to help you reach that peak. In the world of high-performance VW engines, the air jet acts as the "brake" for your main fuel circuit. As your engine climbs through the RPM range, the natural tendency of the carburetor is to richen the mixture. Without the correct air jet size, your engine might stumble or lose power exactly when you need it most. This 190 air jet allows for fine-tuned calibration, ensuring that air bleeds into the emulsion tube at the precise rate required to maintain a crisp, consistent power band throughout your entire acceleration curve. Whether you are building a high-revving street sleeper or a rugged off-road rail, having the right jetting is the difference between a motor that screams and one that struggles.
The EMPI Weber-style 190 air jet is manufactured to exacting tolerances, providing the reliability that Appletree Auto customers have come to expect for decades. When you are dealing with dual-carburetor setups like the 40, 44, or 48 IDF series, consistency between barrels is paramount. A tiny deviation in jet orifice size can lead to uneven cylinder temperatures and erratic idle-to-main circuit transitions. By utilizing these high-quality brass jets, you are investing in the longevity of your flat-four or flat-six engine. Don''t let a minor tuning oversight bottleneck your performance; swapping to a 190 air jet can provide that slight lean adjustment needed at high speeds to prevent "blubbering" and ensure every drop of fuel is converted into raw, air-cooled horsepower. It''s an essential component for any serious mechanic''s jet kit.
FITMENT
This air jet is designed for use with Weber IDF series carburetors and their high-quality EMPI HPMX counterparts. It is typically found in performance applications across the following vehicles:
- Volkswagen Type 1: Beetle, Karmann Ghia, and Thing (1954-1979) equipped with dual IDF/HPMX carbs.
- Volkswagen Type 2: Bus, Transporter, and Campmobile (1950-1979) using performance upright or pancake engine configurations.
- Volkswagen Type 3: Squareback, Fastback, and Notchback utilizing dual-carburetor manifolds.
- Volkswagen Type 4: 411 and 412 models, as well as Type 4 engine swaps into earlier chassis.
- Porsche 914: Four-cylinder models converted to Weber IDF carburetors.
- Custom Builds: Sand Rails, Dune Buggies, Meyers Manx, and Trikes running air-cooled VW powerplants.

PRO TIPS
The 50-60 Point Rule of Thumb
When you are diving into the world of Weber tuning, a classic starting point for your air jet selection is to look at your main jet size. Generally, your air jet should be approximately 50 to 60 "points" larger than your main fuel jet. For example, if you are running a 135-140 main jet, this 190 air jet is often the "sweet spot" for many 1776cc to 1915cc engines. If the engine feels like it is "laying down" or losing steam at the top of the gear, it is often a sign that the air jet is too small, causing the mixture to become overly rich at high RPM. Moving to a 190 helps lean that top-end out for a cleaner pull to the redline.
Check Your Emulsion Tube Seating
The air jet sits directly on top of the emulsion tube inside the carburetor body. When installing your new 190 jets, always inspect the emulsion tube (usually an F11 or F7 in most VW applications) to ensure it is seated fully and that the O-ring or sealing surface is intact. If air leaks around the side of the jet rather than through the calibrated orifice, your tuning efforts will be wasted. Use a high-quality, wide-blade screwdriver that fits the jet slot perfectly; brass is soft, and you don''t want to mar the jet or leave metal shavings inside the carburetor throat which could clog the smaller idle circuits later.
Tuning for Altitude and Atmosphere
Always remember that air jets are your primary tool for compensating for atmospheric changes without drastically altering your main fuel curve. If you are taking your VW from sea level up into the mountains, your engine will naturally run richer because the air is less dense. In these scenarios, increasing the size of your air jetsuch as moving from a 170 or 180 up to this 190allows more air into the mix to compensate for the thinner atmosphere. It is a quick and effective way to "lean out" the high-speed circuit for better driveability during canyon climbs or high-altitude events without having to pull the carburetors apart to change the main jets.
