        OVERVIEW

When it comes to squeezing every ounce of horsepower out of your air-cooled Volkswagen, precision fuel delivery is the name of the game. The Weber IDF series has long been the industry benchmark for performance, but even the best carburetor is only as good as its specific calibration. This EMPI Weber IDF Air Jet, sized at 140, is a critical component for fine-tuning your engine''s high-speed circuit. Unlike the idle jet which governs your low-end transition, the air jet works in tandem with the main jet and emulsion tube to control the air-fuel mixture as the RPMs climb. By introducing a metered amount of air into the fuel column, this jet helps emulsify the mixture, ensuring a crisp, powerful throttle response when you''re wide open on the flats or pulling hard through the gears. If you are looking to eliminate flat spots in the upper RPM range, this is where the magic happens.

Craftsmanship matters when you''re dealing with orifice sizes measured in hundredths of a millimeter. These EMPI jets are manufactured to exacting tolerances to ensure consistent flow rates across all barrels of your dual-carb setup. A 140 air jet is often considered the "sweet spot" for many mid-range engine builds, such as 1776cc to 2110cc displacements, providing enough air to prevent the mixture from becoming overly rich at high engine speeds. If you''ve experienced a "heavy" feeling or a loss of power at the top of your power band, it''s likely your air-to-fuel ratio is drifting too rich. Swapping to the correct air jet allows you to "lean out" the high-end curve without affecting your low-end drivability, giving you the professional-level control required for a truly dialed-in VW street or strip machine. At Appletree Auto, we know that a well-tuned Weber is a thing of beauty, and these jets are the tools you need to achieve that perfection.

        FITMENT

        PRO TIPS

        1. Understand the Inverse Relationship

One of the most common mistakes new tuners make is forgetting that air jets work inversely to main jets. While a larger main jet makes your engine richer, a larger air jet makes your engine leaner at high RPMs. If your VW is "blubbering" or blowing black smoke at 4,500 RPM but runs fine at 2,500 RPM, you likely need to move to a larger air jet (like this 140) to introduce more air and lean out that top-end mixture. Always make one change at a time and document the results to find your engine''s perfect "happy place."

        2. The Golden Ratio of Jetting

As a master specialist, I always recommend a starting point for your air jet that is roughly 40 to 60 points larger than your main jet. For example, if you are running 130 main jets, a 180 or 190 air jet is a standard baseline. However, if you find your engine is starving for fuel at the top end, dropping down to a 140 air jet will richen the mixture significantly at high speeds. This is particularly useful for high-compression engines or those running in colder climates where the air is denser and requires more fuel to maintain a safe air-fuel ratio.

        3. Keep it Clean and Clear

Air jets sit at the very top of the emulsion tube stack, making them the first line of defense against debris entering the main circuit. Even a microscopic piece of lint or dust can partially obstruct a 140 jet
