OVERVIEW
When you''re piloting a high-performance sand rail through the dunes or navigating a rugged Baja bug across technical desert terrain, the last thing you want is ambiguity in your steering. This heavy-duty Latest Rage U-Joint is engineered to bridge the gap between your steering column and your gear box with uncompromising precision. Designed specifically for custom air-cooled Volkswagen applications and off-road builds, this universal joint features a 3/4-36 spline on both ends, making it the industry standard for connecting aftermarket steering shafts to high-quality steering boxes. By replacing worn-out or flexible stock couplings with this rigid, forged-strength component, you eliminate the "dead zone" in your steering wheel, providing a direct mechanical link that translates every input into immediate tire movement.
Durability is the cornerstone of any off-road steering system, and this U-joint is built to withstand the extreme articulation and vibration common in long-travel front ends. Whether you are building a custom steering rack setup or simply upgrading a classic Beetle for better road feel, the 17-2630-0 offers the mechanical integrity required for safety and performance. The 36-spline configuration ensures a high-surface-area grip on your shafts, preventing the rounding or stripping that can occur with lesser components under high-torque maneuvers. At Appletree Automotive, we understand that steering is a "no-fail" system, which is why we recommend this Latest Rage unit for builders who demand a professional-grade finish and long-term reliability in their steering geometry.
FITMENT
This universal joint is a versatile component designed for custom steering configurations and is widely used in the following applications:

PRO TIPS
1. Proper Phasing is Critical
When installing two U-joints on a single steering shaft, it is absolutely vital that they are "in phase." This means the yokes at both ends of the intermediate shaft must be aligned in the same plane. If they are out of phase, it creates an elliptical motion that results in a "binding" sensation or a "lumpy" feel as you turn the steering wheel. Always double-check your alignment before final tightening to ensure the smoothest possible steering rotation through the entire range of motion.
2. Secure Your Splines Correctly
Never rely solely on a set screw to hold your steering system together. When installing this U-joint onto a 3/4-36 spline shaft, we highly recommend "dimpling" the shaft where the set screw makes contact or, better yet, using a through-bolt if the application allows. Always use a high-quality thread-locking compound (like blue Loctite) on the set screws to prevent them from backing out due to the constant vibrations inherent in air-cooled VW engines and off-road driving.
3. Manage Your Steering Angles
While these U-joints are designed for articulation, you should avoid exceeding a 30-degree angle for any single joint. Operating at extreme angles increases the wear on the internal needle bearings and can lead to premature failure or mechanical binding. If your steering geometry requires a sharper turn, consider using a double U-joint or adding a third joint with a support bearing (heim joint) to keep the shaft stable and the angles within a safe operating range.
