Overview
When it comes to the steering geometry of your classic air-cooled Volkswagen, there is no room for compromise. This Premium OCAP Brand Right Inner Tie Rod End is engineered specifically for owners who demand original equipment precision and long-term durability. As the "heart" of the passenger-side steering linkage, the right inner tie rod end plays a dual role: it transmits steering force from the drag link to the spindle and serves as the critical mounting point for your steering damper. Unlike budget-grade alternatives that often suffer from premature boot failure or internal marring, this premium version features a superior forged housing and high-durometer rubber boots designed to withstand the rigors of both daily driving and spirited weekend cruising. If you have noticed "death wobble," vague steering response, or uneven tire wear, it is likely that your factory joints have exceeded their service life, making this OCAP unit the professional choice for restoration.
The "EP" designation in our part number signifies a premium-tier component that meets or exceeds the original Volkswagen specifications. This particular tie rod end is designed for the 1968 through 1977 Beetle and the 1968 through 1974 Karmann Ghia. Because the right inner position is tasked with stabilizing the entire steering rack via the damper, it experiences significantly more lateral stress than the outer ends. This OCAP unit features a precision-ground ball stud and a grease-packed socket that ensures smooth, bind-free rotation throughout the entire steering sweep. Whether you are building a show-winning Ghia or maintaining a reliable daily driver Beetle, installing a high-quality tie rod end is the single most effective way to restore that "factory fresh" steering feel and ensure your vehicle tracks straight and true down the highway.

Pro Tips from the Appletree Garage
Tip 1: The "Count the Turns" Method for Alignment
When removing your old tie rod end, always count the exact number of full rotations it takes to unscrew the joint from the tie rod tube. When installing this new OCAP premium joint, thread it in the exact same number of turns. While this does not replace the need for a professional laser alignment, it will get your "toe-in" close enough to safely drive the vehicle to an alignment shop without scrubbing the rubber off your tires in the first five miles. Don''t forget to loosen the pinch clamps on the tie rod tube before you start spinning!
Tip 2: Inspect the Steering Damper Eyelet Bushing
Since this right inner tie rod end features the mounting hole for your steering damper, it is the perfect time to inspect the damper itself. If the rubber bushing inside the steering damper eyelet is cracked or missing, the damper will "clank" against the new tie rod end, causing a metal-on-metal vibration that can lead to premature wear of the new joint. If you see hydraulic fluid leaking from the damper body or if it offers no resistance when compressed, replace the damper at the same time you install this tie rod end for the best possible results.
Tip 3: Proper Cotter Pin Safety
Never, under any circumstances, reuse an old cotter pin on a steering component. This premium kit includes a new castle nut and cotter pin for a reason. Once you have torqued the castle nut to the factory specification (usually around 22-25 ft-lbs for Type 1), check if the hole in the ball joint stud aligns with a notch in the nut. If it doesn''t align, always tighten the nut slightly further to reach the next windownever loosen it to align the hole. Once the pin is through, wrap the legs tightly around the nut to ensure it cannot snag on road debris or vibrate loose over time.
