OVERVIEW
When it comes to restoring the steering precision of your classic air-cooled Volkswagen, there is no room for compromise. This Premium OCAP Left Side Tie Rod Assembly is engineered to eliminate the vague steering and dangerous front-end "shimmy" that often plagues aging Beetles and Ghias. Unlike budget-grade alternatives, this premium assembly features high-quality forgings and tight tolerances that mirror the original equipment standards. Whether you are daily driving your Bug or preparing a Karmann Ghia for a weekend show, replacing a worn, bent, or seized tie rod with this complete assembly ensures that your steering geometry remains true, providing a crisp response and significantly safer handling characteristics on modern roads.
This specific unit is designed for the left (driver''s) side and comes as a complete, ready-to-install assembly. A major advantage of this premium version is the inclusion of removable and adjustable tie rod ends. In the air-cooled VW world, some cheaper rods come with one fixed end that cannot be replaced, forcing you to buy an entire new rod if a single boot fails or a joint wears out. This OCAP assembly allows for future maintenance by permitting the replacement of individual ends, saving you time and money down the road. It is a vital upgrade for any 1968 to 1977 Standard Beetle or Ghia owner looking to maintain the structural integrity and alignment accuracy of their front suspension system.

PRO TIPS
1. Center Your Steering Before Installation
Before you remove your old tie rod, ensure your steering box is perfectly centered. A common mistake is adjusting the tie rods to compensate for a steering wheel that isn''t centered, which leads to an uneven turning radius. Count the total turns of the steering wheel from lock to lock, then turn it back exactly halfway. Once the box is centered, you can install the new left-side tie rod and adjust it to meet your alignment specs. This ensures that your "peg" in the steering box is riding on the center of the worm gear, providing the longest life for your steering components.
2. Use the Right Tools for the Job
Never use a standard hammer directly on the threaded stud of a tie rod to break it loose from the spindle or pitman arm. This can mushroom the metal or damage the precision-tapered hole in your spindle. Instead, use a dedicated tie rod separator or a "pickle fork" tool. When installing the new premium unit, ensure the tapered surfaces are clean and dry. Avoid getting grease on the taper itself, as the friction fit is what keeps the joint from spinning while you are trying to torque the castle nut to the proper specification.
3. Perform a "System-Wide" Inspection
If your left-side tie rod is worn enough to require replacement, it is highly likely that your right-side tie rod, steering dampener, and ball joints are also reaching the end of their service life. While you have the front end of the Beetle or Ghia on jack stands, check the rubber boots on all steering components. A failing steering dampener is often the hidden culprit behind steering vibration, and replacing it alongside your new tie rod will provide that "new car" feel that every air-cooled enthusiast is looking for. Don''t forget to finish the job with a professional laser alignment to protect your tires from premature wear.
