OVERVIEW
Restore the precision and safety of your classic Volkswagen''s steering with this premium EMPI Right Side Tie Rod Assembly. Over decades of driving, the original steering components on your Beetle or Ghia undergo immense stress, leading to "death wobble," vague steering response, and uneven tire wear. This complete assembly is engineered to meet or exceed original equipment specifications, providing a direct-replacement solution that eliminates the play associated with worn-out ball joint ends. Unlike fixed-end rods found on some budget models, this high-quality unit features removable and adjustable tie rod ends, allowing for fine-tuned toe-in adjustments that are critical for maintaining straight-line stability and preventing premature tire scrubbing. Whether you are performing a full body-off restoration or simply maintaining your daily driver, upgrading to a fresh tie rod assembly is one of the most cost-effective ways to improve the overall "feel" of your vintage VW on the road.
This specific right-side (passenger side) assembly is designed with versatility and durability in mind. It comes equipped with the necessary bracket for the steering damper, ensuring that your front end remains stabilized against road vibrations and unexpected impacts. The robust steel construction is finished with a protective coating to resist corrosion, a vital feature for components living in the harsh environment of the front wheel well. By replacing the entire assembly rather than just the ends, you ensure that the rod itself is straight and that the internal threads are clean and free of the seizing often found in 50-year-old parts. This EMPI assembly provides the peace of mind that comes with knowing your steering linkage is solid, secure, and ready for thousands of miles of cruising. Don''t settle for "good enough" when it comes to your steering geometry; choose the parts that VW enthusiasts have trusted for decades to keep their air-cooled treasures tracking true.

PRO TIPS
1. Always Perform a Professional Alignment Post-Installation
Whenever you disturb the steering linkage by replacing a tie rod, your toe-in settings will inevitably change. Even if you measure the old rod and try to match the length exactly, slight manufacturing tolerances between the old and new parts can result in an alignment that is "off" just enough to ruin a set of tires in a few hundred miles. After installing your new EMPI right-side tie rod, we strongly recommend a professional four-wheel alignment. If you are a DIY enthusiast, ensure you use a dedicated toe-in gauge to set the front wheels to the factory specification (usually 1/8 inch to 1/16 inch toe-in for most stock applications) to ensure the vehicle does not wander at highway speeds.
2. Inspect the Steering Damper and Pitman Arm
Since you will already have the right-side tie rod removed, this is the perfect opportunity to inspect the health of your steering damper and the Pitman arm bushings. The steering damper is a small shock absorber that connects directly to this tie rod; if you notice any fluid leaking from the damper or if it has "dead spots" with no resistance when compressed, replace it immediately. A worn damper combined with a new, tight tie rod can sometimes exacerbate steering vibrations because the new parts transmit more road force than the old, loose components did. Checking these related parts now will save you from having to tear the front end apart a second time next month.
3. Proper Torque and Cotter Pin Safety
Safety is paramount when dealing with steering components. When installing the tie rod ends into the spindles and the steering knuckle, always use a torque wrench to tighten the castle nuts to the factory-specified torque (typically around 25-30 ft-lbs for these ball joints). If the hole for the cotter pin does not line up with the slots in the castle nut once you reach the target torque, NEVER loosen the nut to align it. Always tighten the nut slightly further until the next slot aligns with the hole. Once aligned, insert a fresh cotter pin and peel the legs back securely. Re-using old, brittle cotter pins is a recipe for disaster and is never worth the risk on a critical steering component.
