OVERVIEW
Restore the precision and safety of your classic Volkswagen''s steering system with this premium EMPI Left Side Tie Rod Assembly. Designed specifically for the late-model ball joint front ends found on Beetles and Ghias from May 1968 through 1977, this complete assembly is the definitive solution for eliminating steering wander, "death wobble," and uneven tire wear. Unlike the original factory units that often featured one fixed end, this high-quality replacement features removable and adjustable tie rod ends on both sides of the center tube. This design not only makes future maintenance much more cost-effective but also provides the granular adjustability required to achieve a perfect alignment, ensuring your VW tracks straight and true down the highway.
Constructed from heavy-duty forged steel with high-tolerance ball joints, this tie rod assembly is built to withstand the rigors of daily driving and the occasional spirited canyon run. Each unit comes pre-assembled with the center tube, two tie rod ends, and the necessary clamps and hardware, making it a "drop-in" replacement for your worn-out factory hardware. As a master air-cooled specialist, I cannot stress enough how vital a tight steering linkage is to the overall driving experience; replacing a sloppy left-side tie rod is often the single most impactful suspension upgrade you can perform. Whether you are restoring a pristine 1970 Karmann Ghia or keeping a 1974 Beetle commuter on the road, this EMPI assembly delivers the OEM+ quality your air-cooled investment deserves.

PRO TIPS
Pro Tip 1: The Critical Alignment Rule. Whenever you disturb the steering geometry by replacing a tie rod, you MUST perform a professional front-end alignment. Even if you measure the old tie rod and match the length of the new one perfectly, slight manufacturing tolerances in the ball joint seats can throw your "toe-in" off by several degrees. Incorrect toe-in will destroy a set of brand-new tires in a matter of weeks and can make the car feel darting or unstable at high speeds. Don''t skip this step!
Pro Tip 2: Inspect the Steering Dampener. While you have the left-side tie rod removed, you have the perfect opportunity to inspect your steering dampener (the "shock absorber" for your steering). If the dampener is leaking oil or offers no resistance when compressed by hand, replace it immediately. A fresh tie rod paired with a dead steering dampener will still feel "loose" and can lead to premature wear on your new tie rod ends due to un-dampened road vibrations.
Pro Tip 3: Proper Seating and Torque. When installing the tapered studs of the tie rod ends into the spindle and pitman arm, ensure the holes are clean and free of old grease or burrs. Torque the castle nuts to the factory specification (usually around 22-25 ft-lbs for these models), and always advance the nut slightly further to align the hole for the cotter pin. NEVER back the nut off to align the hole, as this compromises the "crush" fit of the taper and can lead to the stud snapping under stress.
