OVERVIEW
When you''re building a custom off-road machine, a rugged Baja Bug, or a high-performance sand rail, the strength of your fabrication is only as reliable as the components you weld onto the chassis. The A&A MANUFACTURING 1/2-inch hole fabrication tab is a cornerstone of professional-grade metalwork, offering the perfect balance of weight savings and structural integrity. Crafted from high-quality 1/8-inch thick mild steel, these tabs are designed to withstand the brutal vibrations and high-stress loads common in air-cooled VW applications and desert racing environments. Whether you''re mounting accessories, securing body panels, or creating custom linkage points, these tabs provide a clean, uniform look that distinguishes a professional build from a backyard project.
At Appletree Automotive, we understand that precision is everything when it comes to suspension and chassis geometry. That''s why we carry A&A Manufacturing productsindustry leaders known for consistency and weldability. This specific tab features a 1/2-inch pre-drilled hole, saving you countless hours at the drill press and ensuring that every mounting point on your vehicle is perfectly aligned. The 1/8-inch thickness is ideal for medium-duty applications where you need dependable strength without adding unnecessary bulk to your frame. Don''t settle for flimsy, hand-cut scraps when you can utilize laser-cut precision that bites deep into your weld beads and provides a rock-solid foundation for your hardware.
FITMENT
While this is a universal fabrication component, it is most commonly utilized in the following air-cooled VW and off-road applications:
- Volkswagen Beetle (All Years): Perfect for custom shock mounts, seat brackets, and fender supports on Baja conversions.
- Volkswagen Karmann Ghia: Ideal for custom interior bracing and engine bay accessory mounting.
- Volkswagen Bus (Type 2): Used for strengthening roof racks, custom battery trays, and throttle linkages.
- Volkswagen Type 3 (Squareback, Fastback, Notchback): Great for custom suspension modifications and pan-half reinforcements.
- Volkswagen Thing (Type 181): Essential for mounting off-road lighting, brush guards, and roll cage gussets.
- Sand Rails & Dune Buggies: The industry standard for mounting everything from fuel tanks to limit straps and electronics panels.
- Meyers Manx & Kit Cars: Provides a professional mounting solution for fiberglass body-to-chassis connections.

PRO TIPS
1. Proper Surface Preparation for Superior Penetration
Before you strike an arc, it is absolutely critical to remove the mill scale from the tab and the welding surface of your chassis. Mild steel tabs often come with a thin layer of oxidation or oil to prevent rust during shipping. Use a flap disc or a wire wheel to grind the edges of the tab and the mounting area down to bright, shiny metal. This ensures that your weld penetrates deeply into both pieces of steel, preventing cold-lap and ensuring that the 1/2-inch bolt you install won''t eventually rip the tab off under heavy vibration. Remember, a weld is only as strong as the surface it''s bonded to, so don''t skip the prep work!
2. Using Alignment Bolts for Double-Tab Mounts
If you are using these tabs in pairssuch as for a shock mount or a pivot pointalways use a "dummy bolt" during the welding process. Slide a 1/2-inch grade 8 bolt through both tabs with a spacer (or the actual component you are mounting) in between them. This keeps the holes perfectly concentric and prevents the heat from the welding process from warping the tabs out of alignment. If you weld them individually without a guide, you may find it nearly impossible to slide your bolt through once the metal cools and shrinks. Just be sure not to weld the bolt to the tab accidentally!
3. Managing Heat to Prevent Brittle Welds
While 1/8-inch steel is robust, it can still be susceptible to heat-soak if you linger too long with your torch or MIG gun. When welding these to a thinner-walled tube on a roll cage or chassis, focus your heat primarily on the tab and "wash" the puddle onto the tubing. This technique prevents blowing through the thinner chassis metal while ensuring the thicker tab is fully fused. Once the welding is complete, allow the tabs to air-cool naturally. Never quench a freshly welded tab in water, as this can crystallize the steel and make it brittle, leading to a catastrophic failure when you hit a bump on the trail.
