Straight Cut Cam Gear Kit, Steel Gears, Fits VW
* Requires less horsepower to drive.
* New wide steel gear for strength and long life.
* Non-adjustable version.
* Fits VW applications.
OVERVIEW
When you''re pushing the limits of your air-cooled Volkswagen engine, the standard helical-cut gears found in factory configurations can become a liability. In a stock setup, the angled teeth of the cam and crank gears create axial thrust, effectively trying to push the camshaft out through the back of the engine case or grind it into the thrust bearing. This EMPI Straight Cut Cam Gear Kit eliminates that lateral movement entirely. By utilizing a straight-cut (spur gear) design, all mechanical force is directed purely into rotation. This is a critical upgrade for high-performance builds, drag racers, and off-road enthusiasts who are running heavy-duty valve springs and high-lift camshafts that would otherwise put excessive strain on the engine''s thrust surfaces and case webbing.
Beyond the structural advantages, this kit is built for long-term survival in high-RPM environments. The gears are manufactured from high-strength steel with a wide-face design to provide a larger contact patch, ensuring that the load is distributed evenly across the teeth. Because straight-cut gears lack the sliding friction inherent in helical designs, they also offer a slight reduction in parasitic horsepower loss, allowing more of your engine''s energy to reach the crankshaft. While these gears are famous for the mechanical "whine" they producea sound synonymous with high-performance VW enginestheir primary function is to provide rock-solid timing stability and to protect your expensive engine case from the "walking" effect of high-pressure cam setups. This is the non-adjustable version, offering a "set it and forget it" solution for builders who want maximum strength without the complexity of adjustable timing.
FITMENT
This kit is designed for Type 1 based air-cooled engines. It is compatible with a wide range of Volkswagen models including:

PRO TIPS
1. Checking and Setting Gear Backlash
One of the most critical steps when installing straight-cut gears is checking the gear lash (backlash) between the cam gear and the crank gear. Unlike stock helical gears which are more forgiving, straight-cut gears require precise spacing to prevent premature wear or excessive noise. Use a dial indicator to measure the play between the teeth. Ideally, you are looking for .000" to .002" of lash. If the gears are too tight, they will howl excessively and create heat; if they are too loose, they will clatter and cause timing instability. Always test-fit the gears in your specific case and camshaft combination before final assembly.
2. Management of the "Straight-Cut Whine"
Be prepared for a significant change in the acoustic profile of your engine. Straight-cut gears produce a distinct mechanical whine that increases in pitch with engine RPM. This is a normal characteristic of the gear geometry. To ensure the gears live a long life despite the increased vibration inherent in this design, always use a high-quality zinc-rich assembly lube during the initial build. This provides a crucial barrier during the first few minutes of engine break-in before the oil pump has fully pressurized the galleries and coated the gear teeth.
3. Secure Your Cam Bolts Correctly
Because straight-cut gears are often used in high-performance engines that see high RPMs and significant vibration, securing the three cam gear bolts is paramount. Even though the kit includes high-strength bolts, you should always use a drop of Blue (medium-strength) thread-locking compound on each bolt. Torque them to the factory specification (usually 14-18 ft-lbs for 8mm bolts, but always verify with your specific camshaft manufacturer''s instructions). For an extra layer of security, many professional builders will safety-wire the bolts or use a specialized locking tab to ensure they cannot back out inside the engine case.
