OVERVIEW
Precision steering is the backbone of any high-performance air-cooled build, whether you are tearing up the dunes in a sand rail or navigating tight city streets in a lowered Baja Bug. The ALLSTAR PERFORMANCE Bolt-On Steering Bearing is engineered to eliminate the "slop" and friction often found in aging or poorly fabricated steering columns. By utilizing a high-quality, self-aligning sealed bearing, this unit ensures that your steering input is translated directly to the wheels with zero hesitation. When you are building a custom steering setup, you can''t afford to settle for bushings that bind or wear out prematurely; you need a mechanical solution that can withstand the vibrations and harsh environments inherent to the VW off-road and street scene.
What sets this steering bearing apart is its robust, user-friendly design that caters specifically to the fabricator''s needs. The self-aligning feature is a lifesaver during the installation process, as it allows for slight angular misalignments between the steering shaft and the mounting bracket without causing the bearing to bind or seize. This makes it an ideal companion for the C73-162 weld-on steering bracket, creating a professional-grade steering support system that looks as good as it performs. The sealed bearing design keeps out the abrasive sand, dust, and grime that typically destroy open bearings, ensuring that your steering remains "silky smooth" for years of hard driving. Whether you are refreshing a classic Beetle or engineering a ground-up tube chassis, this 3/4-inch shaft bearing is the industry standard for reliability and control.
FITMENT
This is a universal fabrication component designed for 3/4-inch OD steering shafts. It is commonly used in the following applications:

- Sand Rails & Racing Chassis: Ideal for custom tube-frame off-roaders.
- VW Baja Bugs: Perfect for upgrading the steering column during a rugged off-road conversion.
- Custom VW Street Rods: Fits Beetles, Ghias, and Type 3s utilizing a custom 3/4-inch steering shaft.
- Rail Buggies: Provides essential support for long steering columns.
- Universal Fabrication: Fits any vehicle using a standard 3/4-inch outer diameter steering shaft.

PRO TIPS
1. Leverage the Self-Aligning Feature
One of the biggest mistakes builders make is over-tightening the mounting bolts before the steering shaft is fully positioned. Because this bearing is self-aligning, it has a spherical inner race that can tilt within the housing. To get the best results, slide your 3/4-inch shaft through the bearing first, then snug down the mounting bolts. This allows the bearing to "find its center" relative to the shaft''s path, preventing any internal binding that could lead to heavy steering or premature wear on the bearing races.
2. Prep Your Steering Shaft for Success
Before sliding this bearing onto your steering shaft, ensure the shaft is completely free of burrs, paint overspray, or rust. Even a tiny nick on the shaft can make it difficult to slide the bearing into place or could potentially damage the internal seals. I always recommend using a bit of fine-grit emery cloth to polish the area where the bearing will sit, followed by a very light film of anti-seize or dry lubricant. This prevents the bearing from "cold welding" to the shaft over time due to moisture, making future disassembly much easier.
3. Secure with High-Quality Hardware
Since your steering is a critical safety system, never use low-grade hardware to mount this bearing. Use Grade 5 or Grade 8 bolts along with Nyloc locking nuts to ensure that vibrations from the road or trail don''t loosen your steering support. If you are mounting this to a thin sheet metal dash, I highly recommend using a backing plate or large fender washers to spread the load. This prevents the mounting holes from "ovaling out" over time, which is a common cause of steering wheel shake in older air-cooled VW projects.
