OVERVIEW
The EMPI Serpentine Belt Pulley System is the ultimate upgrade for any air-cooled enthusiast looking to move beyond the limitations of the antiquated V-belt design. While the original V-belt served the Volkswagen community for decades, it is prone to slipping, flipping, or snapping entirely under the stress of high-performance driving and high-RPM shifts. This serpentine conversion kit replaces that old technology with a modern, multi-ribbed belt system that provides significantly more surface area for the belt to grip. This results in a much more efficient transfer of power, cooler operating temperatures for your alternator or generator, and the peace of mind that comes with a belt that stays exactly where it belongs, even when you''re winding out your engine on the track or the trail.
Crafted from high-grade billet aluminum and finished with a brilliant polish, this system doesn''t just perform betterit transforms the aesthetic of your engine bay. The crank pulley features permanent, laser-etched timing marks from 0 to 30 degrees, allowing for precision ignition tuning that won''t rub off over time. The tensioner assembly is engineered to bolt directly to your existing alternator or generator stand, making the installation process straightforward for the average garage mechanic. By utilizing a high-tension idler pulley, this kit ensures constant, even pressure across the belt, which virtually eliminates the harmonic vibrations often found in stock pulley setups. Whether you are building a show-winning Cal-Look Beetle or a rugged off-road rail, this EMPI system provides the reliability and style that professional builders demand.

PRO TIPS
Tip 1: Perfect Alignment is Paramount
When installing your serpentine system, the most critical factor for belt longevity is the vertical alignment between the crank pulley and the top pulley. Use a high-quality straight edge or a laser alignment tool to ensure that both pulleys sit in the exact same plane. If your alternator or generator stand is slightly warped or if you are using a chrome stand that has thicker plating, you may need to use thin shims to bring everything into perfect alignment. Even a 1/16th-inch offset can cause the belt to wear prematurely on the edges or "walk" off the ribs under high RPM. Taking the extra ten minutes to verify alignment will ensure your belt lasts for years rather than months.
Tip 2: Do Not Over-Tighten the Tensioner
One of the most common mistakes with serpentine conversions is applying too much tension to the idler pulley. Unlike a V-belt, which requires significant tension to prevent slipping in the groove, a serpentine belt relies on the surface area of the ribs. You want the belt to be firm, but you should still be able to twist the belt about 90 degrees with your thumb and forefinger on the longest run. Over-tightening puts excessive lateral load on the front main bearing of your engine and the bearings inside your alternator or generator. This can lead to premature bearing failure and internal engine wear. Always check the tension again after the first 50 miles of driving as the belt will "set" into the grooves.
Tip 3: Preparation of the Crank Snout
Before sliding your new billet crank pulley onto the crankshaft, inspect the crank snout for any burrs, old rust, or debris. Use a fine-grit emery cloth to lightly polish the surface and apply a small amount of anti-seize or clean engine oil to the shaft. Billet aluminum has a different expansion rate than the steel crankshaft, and a dry installation can lead to "galling," which effectively welds the pulley to the shaft over time. Ensuring a smooth, lubricated fit will make future maintenance much easier. Additionally, always use a high-quality pulley bolt and torque it to the factory specification of 33-40 ft-lbs to prevent the woodruff key from shearing.
