Rod Bearing, .030 Under, for Chevy Journal, Premium
* Designed for Chevy journals on the crank.
* .030" under-sized for precise fitment.
* Use with VW rods.
OVERVIEW
When you are pushing the limits of your air-cooled Volkswagen engine, standard components often won''t cut it. Serious engine builders frequently turn to the "Chevy Journal" conversion for their stroker crankshafts because it allows for a smaller journal diameter (2.000 inches compared to the standard VW 2.165 inches). This reduction provides critical clearance inside the engine case for longer stroke lengths and allows the use of high-strength, widely available performance connecting rods. These EMPI Premium Rod Bearings are specifically engineered for this high-performance niche, providing a .030-inch undersize fitment for crankshafts that have been ground down to restore a perfect, circular bearing surface. Whether you are building a high-revving drag racer or a high-torque off-road sand rail, these bearings provide the structural integrity and heat dissipation necessary to keep your rotating assembly spinning smoothly under extreme thermal and mechanical loads.
At Appletree Automotive, we understand that precision is the difference between a record-setting run and a catastrophic engine failure. That is why we offer these premium-grade bearings, which feature advanced metallurgical compositions designed to withstand the unique stresses of an air-cooled environment. Unlike standard passenger car bearings, these premium units are built to handle the higher oil temperatures and varying oil pressures common in modified VW Type 1, 2, and 3 engines. The .030 undersize specification is a lifesaver for rare or expensive stroker cranks that have seen previous wear; instead of scrapping the crank, you can have it professionally ground and paired with these oversized shells to return your oil clearances to factory-perfect tolerances. When you choose EMPI premium components from Appletree, you are investing in the longevity and reliability of your high-performance Volkswagen investment.
FITMENT
These bearings are designed for performance Volkswagen engines utilizing aftermarket or modified crankshafts with Chevy-sized journals that have been ground .030" under. They are compatible with the following vehicles when equipped with the appropriate high-performance rotating assembly:
- Volkswagen Type 1: Beetle, Super Beetle, and Karmann Ghia (1954-1979).
- Volkswagen Type 2: Bus, Transporter, and Kombi (1950-1971 with Type 1 based engines).
- Volkswagen Type 3: Squareback, Fastback, and Notchback (1961-1973).
- Volkswagen Thing: Type 181 (1973-1974).
- Custom Applications: Dune Buggies, Sand Rails, Trikes, and Kit Cars using VW-based air-cooled engines with Chevy-journal stroker cranks.
- Note: Will NOT fit stock VW crankshafts. Requires rods and crankshaft machined for 2.000" Chevy journals.

PRO TIPS
1. Precision Measurement is Mandatory
Never assume your machine shop''s verbal quote on a crank grind is enough to select your bearings. Before installation, use a high-quality micrometer to measure every single journal on your crankshaft. Then, use a dial bore gauge to measure the inside diameter of the rod with the bearings installed and torqued to spec. You are looking for a specific oil clearance (typically .002" to .003" for performance air-cooled builds). If your clearances are too tight, you risk "spun" bearings; if they are too loose, you will suffer from low oil pressure and premature wear. Taking the time to blueprint your rotating assembly is the hallmark of a master engine builder.
2. The "Dry Back" Rule for Installation
One of the most common mistakes during engine assembly is applying lubricant to the wrong side of the bearing shell. The "back" of the bearing (the steel side that touches the connecting rod) must be completely clean and bone-dry. Any oil or grease trapped between the bearing and the rod can prevent proper heat transfer and may even cause the bearing to shift or "spin" during high-RPM operation. Use a lint-free wipe and a bit of brake cleaner to ensure the rod housing and the bearing back are pristine. Only apply high-quality assembly lube to the "face" of the bearing where it contacts the crankshaft journal.
3. Proper Torque and "Crush" Verification
When installing these EMPI premium bearings, it is vital to follow the torque specifications of your specific connecting rods (which may differ from stock VW specs if you are using aftermarket H-beams). After torquing the rod bolts, ensure the rod can move side-to-side on the journal freely. If the rod feels "sticky" or bound up, you likely have a clearance issue or a slight misalignment. Additionally, always check for "bearing crush"the slight protrusion of the bearing ends that ensures they are held firmly in place by radial pressure when the rod cap is tightened. This "crush" is what keeps the bearing from moving during the violent reciprocating motions of a 7,000+ RPM engine.
