OVERVIEW
When you are pushing the limits of a high-performance air-cooled Volkswagen build, the internal rotating assembly requires precision components that can handle increased stress and heat. These EMPI Premium Rod Bearings are specifically engineered for crankshafts featuring the popular 2.000-inch Chevy journal. In the world of stroker motors, switching to a Chevy journal is a common tactic to reduce friction and allow for a wider variety of high-strength aftermarket connecting rods, such as H-beams or I-beams. These .010 undersize bearings are the professional choice when your performance crankshaft has been turned or reground by ten-thousandths of an inch to ensure a perfectly round and smooth mating surface. By utilizing a premium alloy construction, these bearings offer superior embedability and fatigue resistance, ensuring that your engine internals remain protected even under the high-RPM demands of a 2110cc, 2275cc, or larger displacement powerhouse.
At Appletree Automotive, we understand that a "standard" build often isn''t enough for the serious enthusiast. These premium-grade bearings are designed to provide a consistent oil film thickness, which is critical for preventing metal-to-metal contact during the intense combustion cycles of a flat-four engine. The "Premium" designation from EMPI signifies a higher standard of quality control and material composition compared to budget-grade alternatives. Whether you are rebuilding a seasoned drag racer or assembling a fresh street-sleeper, these bearings provide the exact tolerances required for a Chevy-journal-equipped stroker crank. Choosing the right bearing size is the difference between a motor that lasts for decades and one that fails on the first pass. With these .010 under bearings, you are getting the reliability and precision fitment necessary to keep your VW air-cooled engine running cool, smooth, and powerful.

PRO TIPS
1. Always Verify Your Crankshaft Dimensions
Never assume the size of your crankshaft journals based solely on what was written on the box or told to you by a previous owner. Before installing these .010 under bearings, use a high-quality micrometer to measure each journal on your Chevy-cut crankshaft. You are looking for a diameter that is exactly .010 inches smaller than the standard Chevy 2.000-inch spec. Additionally, always use Plastigage during the dry-assembly phase to verify your actual oil clearances. In a high-performance VW air-cooled engine, you generally want to see between .002 and .0025 inches of clearance for a Chevy journal to ensure proper oil flow and cooling at high RPMs. Skipping this step is the most common cause of premature bearing failure.
2. Achieve Surgical Cleanliness During Assembly
The smallest speck of dust or lint can ruin a brand-new set of premium bearings. Before you snap these into your connecting rods, ensure that both the rod bores and the backs of the bearings are completely clean and dry. Any debris trapped behind the bearing shell will create a "high spot" on the bearing surface, leading to localized heating and eventual seizure. Use a lint-free cloth and a quick-evaporating cleaner like brake parts cleaner to prep the surfaces. When you are ready for final assembly, apply a high-quality assembly lube to the bearing face and the crank journal, but keep the "back side" of the bearing and the rod seat dry to ensure the bearing stays locked in place and does not spin.
3. Check for Proper Tang Alignment and Seating
When installing these EMPI Premium bearings, pay close attention to the locating tangs (the small tabs on the edge of the bearing). These must seat perfectly into the machined recesses of your connecting rods. If the tang is not perfectly aligned, the bearing shell will be distorted when you torque the rod bolts, leading to immediate engine damage upon startup. After snapping the bearings into the rod and cap, press down firmly with your thumbs to ensure they are fully seated. Once the rods are torqued to spec on the crank, check for "side play" by sliding the rod back and forth on the journal. If the rod does not move freely side-to-side, you likely have an alignment issue or a clearance problem that must be addressed before the case halves are closed.
