        OVERVIEW

As any seasoned air-cooled enthusiast knows, there is nothing more frustrating than a leaky cabin that ruins a fresh headliner or causes rust to bubble under the rear parcel tray. This IAP Rear Window Seal is the professional-grade solution for 1972 through 1977 Volkswagen Beetle Sedans that are suffering from dry-rotted, cracked, or shrinking factory rubber. Manufactured from high-density EPDM rubber, this seal provides a superior barrier against the elements, ensuring that rain, car wash spray, and debris stay outside where they belong. Whether you are finishing a ground-up restoration or simply performing much-needed maintenance on your daily driver, this seal offers the perfect blend of flexibility for easy installation and rigidity for a long-lasting, airtight fit against the glass and the body flange.

This particular seal is designed in the "standard" style, which means it provides a clean, black aesthetic without the need for the troublesome chrome or plastic decorative trim bits that often yellow and crack over time. This "Cal-Look" style is preferred by many builders for its sleek, understated appearance and the fact that it eliminates one more area where moisture can trap against the metal. At Appletree Auto, we understand that fitment is everything when it comes to glass rubber. That is why we source seals that match the original OEM profiles, ensuring the corners don''t "bunch up" and the lip sits flush against your paint. Don''t let a degraded seal compromise your VW''s interior; upgrade to a fresh IAP seal and enjoy the quiet, dry ride your Beetle was meant to provide.

        FITMENT

This rear window seal is designed specifically for the larger rear glass found on late-model Type 1 Sedans. Please note it does not fit Convertible models.

        • Type 1 Mexican Beetle: Fits various late-model years with the large rear window configuration.

        PRO TIPS

        1. The "Rope-In" Technique is Essential

To install this seal like a pro, you shouldn''t try to pry it onto the body with screwdrivers, which can chip your paint or crack the glass. Instead, clean the glass thoroughly and wrap the seal around the edge of the window. Then, tuck a 1/4-inch nylon rope or heavy-duty clothesline into the outer groove of the seal, overlapping the ends at the bottom center. With a helper pushing firmly from the outside, slowly pull the rope from the inside of the car. This will "walk" the rubber lip over the metal body flange perfectly. Using a mixture of soapy water or a dedicated rubber lubricant will make this process significantly smoother.

        2. Temperature Matters for Malleability

Never attempt to install a cold window seal. If the rubber is stiff, it won''t seat correctly in the corners, leading to gaps and potential leaks. We recommend laying the seal out on a warm patch of concrete or the hood of a car in the direct sun for at least 30 minutes prior to installation. This makes the EPDM rubber much more pliable and forgiving. If you are working in a cold climate, a heat gun on a very low setting (used cautiously) or a tub of warm water can also help soften the seal so it conforms to the body contours of your Beetle without fighting you.

        3. Check Your Headliner Alignment First

The rear window seal is one of the primary components that holds the rear section of your headliner in place. Before you "rope" the glass in, ensure that your headliner material is pulled tight and glued securely to the window flange. If the headliner is loose or bunched up, the seal will not seat flat against the metal, which is a common cause of "mystery leaks" in the rear of the car. Trim any excess headliner material so it doesn''t interfere with the seal''s inner channel, but leave enough so that the rubber lip completely covers the fabric edge for a professional, factory-finished look.
