OVERVIEW
When it comes to maintaining the structural integrity and aesthetic appeal of your air-cooled Volkswagen, it is often the smallest components that make the biggest difference. This EMPI Rear Deck Lid Handle Seal is a critical restoration piece designed to provide a weather-tight barrier between your engine compartment handle and the painted surface of the deck lid. Over decades of exposure to UV rays, rain, and temperature fluctuations, original factory seals become brittle, crack, and eventually fail. When this happens, moisture finds its way behind the handle, leading to unsightly paint bubbling, oxidation, and the dreaded "VW rust" that can compromise your engine lid. By replacing your worn-out gasket with this high-quality reproduction, you are ensuring that your engine bay stays dry and your paint remains protected from the corrosive effects of trapped water.
Crafted from premium, pliable rubber, this seal is engineered to match the exact contours of the late-model "T-handle" style found on mid-to-late seventies Beetles and second-generation Buses. As a master specialist here at Appletree Automotive, I cannot stress enough how important it is to use the correct profile seal for these specific years. This isn''t a universal "close enough" part; it is a dedicated stock replacement that fits snugly into the handle base, providing that crisp, finished look that distinguishes a professional restoration from a budget repair. Whether you are finishing a ground-up restoration on a 1974 Thing or simply freshening up the daily driver 1972 Super Beetle, this seal is an essential, low-cost investment in your vehicle''s longevity and curb appeal. Don''t let a three-dollar part lead to a three-hundred-dollar paint repair down the road.

PRO TIPS
1. Surface Preparation is Key
Before you install your new EMPI seal, take the time to thoroughly clean the area around the handle mounting hole on the deck lid. Use a mild degreaser or a clay bar to remove any old wax, road grime, or residual rubber from the previous gasket. If you notice any light surface rust starting to form under where the old seal sat, treat it with a rust inhibitor and a touch-up pen before installing the new rubber. This prevents the moisture-trapping cycle from starting all over again under your fresh seal.
2. Use a Dry Lubricant for Seating
When you are sliding the seal onto the handle base, it can sometimes be a tight fit. While it is tempting to use a petroleum-based grease, I highly recommend avoiding it as it can degrade the rubber over time. Instead, use a tiny amount of soapy water or a silicone-based rubber dressing. This allows the seal to slide into the perfect position without binding or tearing. Once the handle is tightened down, the water will evaporate, leaving the seal firmly "locked" in place against the bodywork.
3. Don''t Overtighten the Handle Bolts
A common mistake is cranking down the handle mounting bolts too hard in an attempt to get a better "seal." This actually does the opposite by distorting the rubber gasket and potentially causing it to squeeze out from the sides or crack prematurely. Tighten the bolts until the seal is evenly compressed against the paint. You want a firm seat that makes full contact all the way around the perimeter, but you shouldn''t see the rubber bulging or warping. A properly seated seal should look like a thin, uniform black line between the chrome (or plastic) handle and the metal lid.
