OVERVIEW
When it comes to the safety and reliability of your classic air-cooled Volkswagen, nothing is more critical than your stopping power. These premium rear brake shoes are specifically engineered for the 1968 through 1979 IRS (Independent Rear Suspension) Beetle and Karmann Ghia models. Designed to meet or exceed original equipment specifications, these shoes provide the consistent friction and heat dissipation necessary to keep your vintage ride stopping straight and true. Whether you are navigating daily city traffic or cruising down a coastal highway, these shoes offer the peace of mind that only high-quality braking components can provide. We understand that the weight distribution and braking dynamics of a rear-engine VW require specific friction coefficients, and these shoes are manufactured to handle those exact demands without premature fading or excessive drum wear.
Restoring a VW braking system is about more than just swapping parts; it is about restoring the original driving feel and safety margins of the vehicle. These brake shoes feature a precision-bonded lining that ensures maximum surface contact with the brake drum, which is essential for effective torque transfer during hard stops. At Appletree Auto, we frequently see enthusiasts overlook the condition of their rear shoes, but because the rear brakes on a Beetle or Ghia handle a significant portion of the stabilization during deceleration, keeping them in top shape is non-negotiable. This set includes four shoes, which is exactly what you need to service both sides of your rear axle. Don''t settle for "universal" fits that require modification; choose the shoes that were built for the 40mm wide drum configurations found on late-model Volkswagens and custom dune buggies alike.

PRO TIPS
Tip 1: Beware of Oil Contamination
One of the most common causes of rear brake failure on an air-cooled VW is a leaking axle seal or O-ring. If you pull your drums and find a sticky, black sludge covering the shoes, they are compromised. Even if you use a whole can of brake cleaner, the oil often soaks into the porous friction material. Once a shoe is oil-soaked, it will never provide the same friction again and may cause the car to pull to one side or cause the brakes to "grab" unexpectedly. Always replace your axle seals and O-rings at the same time you install these new shoes to ensure a dry, safe braking environment.
Tip 2: Measure Twice, Order Once
Volkswagen was famous for "transition years," and many dune buggies are built using a mix of parts from different eras. Before ordering, always measure the width of your existing shoes. These shoes are 40mm (1-9/16") wide. Earlier Beetles (pre-1968) typically used a narrower 30mm shoe. If you try to put 40mm shoes into a 30mm drum, the drum won''t seat; if you put 30mm shoes into a 40mm drum, you lose significant stopping power and the shoes may shift. Always verify your drum depth before installation to ensure you have the correct match for your specific spindle or trailing arm setup.
Tip 3: The "Star Adjuster" Secret
When installing these new shoes, take the time to completely remove, clean, and lightly grease your star adjusters. Many "spongy" brake pedals are actually caused by adjusters that are seized or improperly set. After installing the new shoes, adjust them until the wheel locks, then back them off exactly 2 to 3 "clicks" until you hear a very slight drag. This ensures the wheel cylinder doesn''t have to travel as far to engage the shoes, resulting in a high, firm pedal. Also, remember to check your brake adjustment again after the first 500 miles, as the shoes will "seat" into the drum and may require a minor follow-up adjustment.
