OVERVIEW
When it comes to the structural integrity and safety of your classic Volkswagen, few fasteners are as critical as the rear axle nut. This EMPI 36mm Chrome Rear Axle Nut is engineered to provide the perfect balance between show-quality aesthetics and heavy-duty performance. In the world of air-cooled restoration, the rear axle nut is often a neglected component, frequently found rusted, rounded off, or buried under decades of road grime. By upgrading to this high-luster chrome-plated version, you are not only ensuring a secure connection between your rear brake drums or discs and the axle splines, but you are also adding a refined finishing touch to your vehicle''s exterior. This is especially vital for open-wheeled vehicles like dune buggies, sand rails, and Baja Bugs, where the axle hardware is a prominent visual element of the rear suspension setup.
Beyond its striking appearance, this 36mm nut is manufactured from high-strength hardened steel to withstand the immense rotational forces and high torque requirements inherent to the VW rear end. Proper seating of the rear hub is essential to prevent play in the splines, which can lead to catastrophic failure of the drum or the axle itself. This EMPI nut features precision-cut threads that allow for smooth installation and a consistent clamp load across the face of the hub. Whether you are building a daily driver, a weekend cruiser, or a dedicated show car, using a fresh, high-quality axle nut ensures that your wheel bearings remain pre-loaded correctly and your drivetrain stays dependable for thousands of miles to come. Do not settle for pitted, old hardware when you can secure your investment with a part that looks as good as it performs.

PRO TIPS
1. Achieve Proper Torque for Safety
The rear axle nut on an air-cooled VW requires a massive amount of torque to seat correctly, typically around 217 foot-pounds (check your specific shop manual for year-to-year variances). You should never attempt to tighten this nut with a standard 1/2-inch drive ratchet. We strongly recommend using a 36mm heavy-duty socket paired with a long breaker bar or a specialized torque multiplier tool, often referred to as a ''Torque Meister.'' Failure to reach the proper torque spec can result in the hub "wobbling" on the axle splines, which will quickly strip the soft metal of the drum and require expensive repairs.
2. Always Use a New Cotter Pin
This axle nut is designed to be secured with a heavy-duty cotter pin to prevent it from backing off during operation. Never, under any circumstances, reuse an old cotter pin. When you have reached the desired torque, if the castle notches on the nut do not align perfectly with the hole in the axle, always tighten the nut slightly further until the holes alignnever loosen the nut to meet the hole. Ensure the cotter pin is bent tightly around the nut to prevent any movement or rattling that could mar the beautiful chrome finish.
3. Protect the Chrome During Installation
To keep your new chrome nut looking pristine, avoid using an uncontrolled impact wrench, which can chatter and chip the plating. If you must use a socket directly on the chrome, you can place a thin layer of plastic wrap or a single layer of masking tape over the nut before sliding the socket on. This provides a buffer that helps prevent the steel socket from scratching the mirror finish. Additionally, applying a small amount of anti-seize lubricant to the axle threads (but not the face of the nut) will ensure that the nut can be removed easily in the future without galling the threads.
