OVERVIEW
Upgrade your air-cooled powerplant with the AA Performance Dual Port Single 40mm Carburetor Kit, a high-performance solution designed to provide the aggressive throttle response and increased airflow of an IDF-style carburetor without the complexity of a dual-carb setup. This center-mount configuration is a favorite among VW enthusiasts who want to bridge the gap between a restrictive stock Solex and high-end dual racing carbs. By utilizing a single 40mm IDF-style carburetor mounted on a high-flow Empi manifold, you gain significantly more "breath" for your 1600cc to 2110cc engine, resulting in improved mid-range torque and a much more satisfying exhaust note. Whether you are building a spirited daily driver, a rugged Baja bug, or a sleek Karmann Ghia, this kit delivers the "big carb" look and performance while keeping your engine bay clean and your linkage adjustments simple.
The heart of this kit is the AA Performance 40mm IDF-style carburetor, which has been precision-engineered to replicate the legendary Italian design known for its reliability and tunability. This is not a Weber-brand unit, but a robust and cost-effective alternative that accepts standard IDF jets and components, making it incredibly versatile for fine-tuning. The kit comes complete with a chrome air cleaner featuring a high-flow gauze element, an Empi single IDF intake manifold, and all the necessary gaskets and hardware for a professional installation. We have seen these kits perform exceptionally well on Type 1 dual-port engines, providing a noticeable power bump that you can feel the moment you step on the gas. If you are tired of dealing with old, worn-out factory carburetors and want a modern, performance-oriented upgrade that won''t break the bank, this AA Performance kit is the definitive choice for your VW project.

PRO TIPS
1. Master the Center-Mount Manifold Heat
One of the most critical aspects of running a single center-mount IDF-style carburetor is ensuring your manifold stays warm. Because the carburetor is located far from the cylinder heads, the fuel-air mixture can "fall out of suspension" and puddle in the manifold if it gets too cold, leading to "stumbling" or "icing" in cooler weather. Always ensure that your exhaust system has functional heat riser ports and that the pre-heat tubes on your Empi manifold are securely connected and free of carbon blockage. If you are running a merged competition header without heat risers, you may experience drivability issues during warm-up; in those cases, we highly recommend wrapping the manifold with heat tape or switching to an exhaust that supports intake pre-heating.
2. Fine-Tuning for Your Specific Displacement
While this kit comes pre-jetted with a 155 main and 60 idle jet, please remember that "out of the box" settings are a starting point, not a final destination. Air-cooled VW engines vary wildly based on camshaft profile, cylinder head porting, and compression ratios. If you experience a "flat spot" just as you transition from cruising to acceleration, you may need to step up to a 65 idle jet. Conversely, if your spark plugs are coming out soot-black after a highway run, you might need to drop the main jet size. Always perform a "plug chop" test at various RPM ranges to ensure your air-fuel ratio is optimal for your specific engine build and local elevation.
3. Check for Linkage and Fan Shroud Clearance
When installing a single 40mm IDF-style carb, space can get tight between the carburetor and the fan shroud, especially if you are using an aftermarket "doghouse" shroud or a high-output alternator. Before tightening everything down, mock up the carburetor on the manifold and check the full range of motion of the throttle arm. Ensure the arm doesn''t hit the shroud at wide-open throttle. Additionally, because the throttle cable now pulls from a different angle than the stock Solex, we recommend using a universal throttle cable kit or a cable barrel nut to fine-tune the tension. A smooth, non-binding linkage is the difference between a jerky ride and a precision driving machine.
