Pro Tech Tips for Push Rod Installation

Tip 1: Verify Straightness Before Installation. Even with new parts, it is a best practice to roll each push rod across a flat piece of glass. If you see any light under the center or notice a wobble, the rod is bent and should not be used, as it will cause inconsistent valve lift and premature valvetrain wear.

Tip 2: Check Your Valve Geometry. When replacing push rods, always re-check your rocker arm geometry. Even "stock length" rods can vary slightly between different manufacturers. Ensuring the rocker arm adjuster screw is properly aligned with the valve stem will maximize the life of your valve guides and seals.

Tip 3: Lubricate the Ends Properly. During assembly, apply a generous amount of high-pressure assembly lube to both the lifter end and the rocker arm cup of the push rod. This prevents "dry start" galling and friction damage during the critical first few seconds of engine startup before oil pressure is fully established.
