1. Proper Thread Sealing and Grounding
When installing your sending units into the T-fitting, it is vital to use a high-quality thread sealant, but you must be careful with the application. Many oil pressure and temperature sending units rely on the brass body of the fitting to complete the electrical ground circuit to the engine case. If you wrap the threads too heavily with Teflon tape, you may insulate the sensor, causing your gauges to give erratic readings or fail to work entirely. We recommend using a small amount of liquid thread sealer or a single wrap of tape, leaving the first two threads bare to ensure a solid metal-to-metal contact for grounding purposes.
2. Clocking and Clearance Checks
Before you tighten the T-fitting into the block, do a "dry fit" to check the clearance with your distributor and fuel pump. Depending on which distributor you are running (especially larger HEI units or 009 units with vacuum canisters), space can be very tight. You want to "clock" the fitting so that the sending units are positioned where they won''t vibrate against other components.
