OVERVIEW
When you are rebuilding an air-cooled Volkswagen engine, the foundation of your entire build rests on the precision of your main bearings. These IAP Silverline main bearings are engineered specifically for engines where the magnesium or aluminum case has seen significant service and required a substantial .040 line bore to restore the bearing saddles to a perfectly round and concentric state. As any master engine builder knows, years of heat cycles and vibration can cause the case to "squish" or become egg-shaped. By machining the case to .040 over, you are ensuring that your crankshaft has a stable, perfectly aligned platform to rotate upon. These bearings provide the necessary oversized outer diameter to snuggly fit that machined case while maintaining a standard inner diameter to match a factory-spec, unground crankshaft. This specific configuration is a lifesaver for vintage cases that might otherwise be destined for the scrap heap, allowing you to salvage original German metal with modern, high-tolerance components.
At Appletree Automotive, we understand that oil pressure is the lifeblood of your flat-four. These Silverline bearings feature a robust steel-backed construction with a high-quality alloy lining designed to withstand the unique stresses of the air-cooled environment. Because this set is configured for a standard crankshaft and standard thrust, it is the ideal choice for builders who have a pristine or freshly polished standard crank but are working with a heavily seasoned engine block. The precision-drilled oil holes and oil grooves are designed to maximize hydrodynamic lubrication, ensuring that a consistent film of oil stays between the journal and the bearing surface even under high-load conditions. Whether you are restoring a classic Beetle for Sunday cruises or building a reliable powerplant for a weekend woods buggy, these bearings deliver the exact clearances required for long-term durability and peak engine performance.

PRO TIPS
1. Triple-Check Your Case Measurements
Before you even open the plastic packaging on these bearings, you must use a high-quality dial bore gauge to verify the size of your engine case saddles. A .040 line bore is a significant amount of material removed. If your machinist only cut the case to .020 or .030, these bearings will not seat, and forcing them will distort the bearing shells. Ensure the case is clean, the halves are torqued to spec (without the crank inside), and measure at multiple angles to ensure the saddles are perfectly round. Remember the old engine builder''s mantra: measure twice, install once.
2. Verify Dowel Pin Alignment and Oil Holes
One of the most common mistakes during assembly is failing to properly align the bearing dowel pins. When installing the bearings into the case halves, ensure the dowel pins are fully seated in the bearing holes. If the bearing isn''t perfectly indexed, the case halves will not seal correctly, and you risk crushing the bearing or damaging the case. Furthermore, always double-check that the oil holes in the bearings align perfectly with the oil galleries in the case. Even a slight misalignment can restrict oil flow, leading to immediate bearing failure upon the first startup.
3. Use Proper Assembly Lube and Pre-Oil the System
Dry starts are the enemy of new bearings. Use a dedicated high-pressure engine assembly lube on the bearing surfaces during the build processavoid using just standard motor oil, as it can run off the surfaces before you are ready to fire the engine. Once the engine is fully assembled and installed, always prime the oil system. Remove the spark plugs and crank the engine until you see the oil pressure light go out or see pressure on your gauge. This ensures that the narrow clearances in your .040 over build are fully saturated with oil before the journals are subjected to the heat and pressure of combustion.
