OVERVIEW
When it comes to the front-end integrity of your classic Volkswagen, there is no room for compromise. If you have noticed your Beetle wandering across the lane or if you can physically move your front wheels while the vehicle is jacked up, it is time for a front-end overhaul. This Premium Brand Link Pin Rebuild Kit is the definitive solution for restoring the tight, responsive steering that defined the early air-cooled era. Designed specifically for the king pin style front beams found on pre-1966 models, these horizontal link pins are the critical pivot points that connect your spindles to the steering knuckles. Over decades of service, the original bushings wear down, leading to the dreaded front-end slop that compromises both safety and tire longevity. By installing this comprehensive kit, you are not just replacing parts; you are restoring the structural geometry of your VW''s suspension to factory-new specifications.
This premium kit is engineered to provide a superior fit and finish compared to standard budget alternatives. We understand that air-cooled enthusiasts demand longevity, which is why this set includes high-grade hardened steel pins and precision-machined bushings designed to withstand the rigors of both daily driving and spirited weekend cruising. The kit is fully inclusive, providing enough components to service both the driver and passenger sides of your vehicle. Beyond just the pins and bushings, we include the necessary shims, seals, and grease fittings required for a professional-grade installation. Because these pins utilize a shim-stacking method to set your front-end camber, having a fresh, complete set of shims is vital for achieving a perfect alignment. Don''t settle for a shaky ride when a weekend in the garage with the right parts can make your vintage Volkswagen drive like it just rolled off the assembly line in Wolfsburg.

PRO TIPS
1. Master the Shim Stack for Perfect Alignment
The link pin system uses a specific sequence of shims to set the camber and the offset of the spindle. There should always be a total of 10 shims per link pin (40 shims total for the entire front end). The distribution of these shimshow many go on the inside versus the outside of the carrieris what determines your wheel alignment. Always consult a factory workshop manual for the specific shim chart based on your year and model. Improper shim distribution can lead to severe tire wear and unpredictable handling characteristics. Never omit a shim; if you have fewer than 10 per pin, the assembly will not tighten correctly and will lead to premature failure of the new parts.
2. Precision Reaming is Non-Negotiable
When you press the new bushings into the torsion arm, the inner diameter of the bushing will naturally shrink slightly due to the interference fit. To ensure the link pins rotate smoothly without binding, you must use a link pin reamer to clear the bushings to the exact size of the pin. Attempting to force the pins into un-reamed bushings will result in a "frozen" front end that won''t take grease and will ride incredibly harsh. Use a high-quality cutting oil during the reaming process and take your time to ensure the holes are perfectly concentric. A properly reamed bushing should allow the pin to slide in with firm thumb pressure but have zero detectable side-to-side play.
3. Don''t Neglect the Grease Seals and Fittings
The longevity of your new link pin kit depends entirely on lubrication. During assembly, ensure the rubber seals and O-rings are seated perfectly to keep road grime out and fresh grease in. Once the kit is installed, use a high-pressure grease gun to pump a quality moly-based or lithium grease through the new Zerk fittings until you see a small amount of clean grease purging from the seals. We recommend greasing your link pins every 3,000 miles or after any significant wet-weather driving. This prevents the metal-on-metal galling that causes the front end to seize up, ensuring your steering remains light and effortless for years to come.
